The Sony ECM-W5R is a wireless microphone system receiver designed primarily for cameras equipped with Sony's Multi Interface (MI) hot shoe. It connects directly to the camera's MI hot shoe, enabling cable-free digital audio recording and power supply directly from the camera.

A USB-C adapter is included to connect the receiver to a smartphone or computer, for example. To connect to other cameras, a 3.5 mm TRS cable is required, which can be purchased separately.

The receiver can also pick up sound from the microphone of compatible Sony wireless headphones and record it to the camera. With a compatible microphone, the system supports 3D binaural recording, which records not only the speaker's voice but also the surrounding sounds with a natural sense of depth.
