Sigma's 70-200mm f/2.8 Sports is a long-awaited novelty. The lens has been completely redesigned and does not borrow anything from previous versions. The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports is a modern, fast-focusing, weather-protected telephoto zoom with image stabilization, which is suitable for professional use as well as demanding sports and nature photography.
The body, made of a new metal alloy, is mechanically durable, the bayonet is made of brass and the bayonet and other connection points are protected with seals, and Sigma promises that the lens is dust and weather-resistant. The outer lens elements have a water and dirt-repellent coating. The coating also makes cleaning easier.
In addition to durability and weather protection, the lens design takes usability into account. Professionals and amateurs alike will appreciate the feel of the zoom and focus rings. The controls on the side of the lens allow you to change the minimum focusing distance setting, image stabilization settings, and there is also a customizable switch. The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 also includes the Focus Hold buttons familiar from more robust telephoto lenses. By pressing the Focus Hold button, you can lock the autofocus in the desired position. The tripod collar is removable, it clicks into place at 90-degree intervals, and the tripod collar leg is now Arca-Swiss compatible. This means you can attach the lens directly to tripod heads such as Sirui or 3 Legged Thing without a separate quick plate!
Updated high-end image quality
The most important aspect of the lens, i.e. image quality, has received the biggest improvements. The optical structure is modern and completely new. There are 24 elements in 22 groups, and up to nine of these are FLD (Fluorite Low Dispersion) special lenses, and one of the elements is an SLD (Special Low Dispersion) special lens. The lens is sharp even when shooting at full aperture without major distortion, and reflections are kept well under control when shooting against backlight.
In addition to sharpness and accuracy, attention has been paid to the quality of the image. Thanks to the lens design and rounded diaphragm blades, objects outside the depth of field are beautifully soft. The lens is designed without compromise, so the weight (1.8kg) and filter thread size (82mm) are slightly larger than competitors.
In keeping with the requirements of Sigma's Sports lens series, the autofocus is fast with an HSM motor. The lens's powerful image stabilizer has a separate panning setting.
Like other new Sigma lenses, the 70-200mm Sports is compatible with the Sigma Dock USB dock, which allows you to adjust focus settings and update the lens software. The autofocus can be calibrated at four different focal lengths, and the autofocus behavior can be selected to be fast or smooth (a great feature especially for video shooting). You can program these focus adjustments to the previously mentioned customizable switch, for example, setting one can be the sports photography setting (fastest focus, focusing range limitation to the field so that the focus does not seek out objects that are too close) and setting two can be soft focus for video shooting. The lens is also compatible with Sigma's 1.4X and 2X teleconverters.
