The first Olympus PEN film camera was released back in 1959. And at first glance, this camera is surprisingly stylish and has a clean design for a product of the digital age. However, when you look at it from the top and back, you can see the adjustment rings, buttons and a large touchscreen.

This same division also continues in the shooting process and technology itself. The ease of use and small size familiar from the Pen series, suitable for a camera that is always with you, are now combined with the technology of the more robust OM System bodies. There is AI-taught autofocus that recognizes people and animals, built-in 5-stop image stabilization and IPX1-rated weather protection. With this camera, you don't have to stop taking pictures when it starts to rain!

Practical technology and differences from its big brothers

Inside the camera, there is the TruePic IX processor familiar from more advanced models and a high-quality 121-point cross-type phase-detection autofocus system. Artificial intelligence has been brought to this size class, but it is calibrated more for everyday use: AF recognizes people and pets (cats and dogs). So, this model does not have the extensive tracking of vehicles (trains, planes) like the OM-3.

It is also worth noting the technical differences in the sensor compared to more expensive models. Unlike the super-fast stacked sensor of the OM-1 and OM-3 models, the new PEN uses a more traditional 20-megapixel Live MOS sensor. Since the sensor's readout speed is at a more traditional level, for example, the popular Pro Capture pre-shooting function works at a maximum of 30 frames per second in this model (vs. 50/120 fps for stacked sensors). However, the camera's speed is more than enough for fast-paced everyday situations, portraits and street photography!

In terms of durability, the PEN offers IPX1-rated weather protection. It doesn't match the OM-5's heavier IP53 pressurized water resistance, but combined with the weather-sealed 14-42mm III kit lens, it ensures that you don't have to hide the camera in a bag when a normal downpour catches you.

Computational photography right at your fingertips

OM System is a pioneer in in-camera computational photography. The PEN body features a dedicated CP button that gives you instant access to familiar special features:

• High Res Shot: 50 megapixel high-resolution images taken directly from the handheld (using image stabilization).
• Live ND (ND16): An in-camera, software-based ND filter that lets you make flowing water look soft without glass filters.
• Live Composite: The camera gradually builds a night scene on your screen. Ideal for capturing star trails or light paintings.

In addition, there is a mechanical switch on the front of the camera for adjusting and selecting color and black and white profiles.
