The Olympus 12-40mm F2.8 was the most popular Pro lens and now a new version II has been released under the name OM System. The biggest difference is the more robust IP53 weather protection and updated coatings. The IP53 weather protection means that when combined with the OM-1 body, the whole thing can even withstand rainy weather.
The front lens also has a fluorine coating that makes cleaning easier and repels dirt.
Otherwise, the optics are the same as the previous one, i.e. very sturdy construction, image quality is okay and the aperture is fixed at F2.8 throughout the entire focal length range. The cine equivalent focal length is 24-80mm, which means it covers most of the most common shooting situations, from large landscapes to detailed portraits.
Thanks to its good aperture and the powerful body stabilizers of OM System and Olympus cameras, this lens works well for handheld photography even when nature is at its most beautiful, i.e. in the evening and morning twilight when exposure times are longer. Video recording is also possible thanks to the MSC autofocus, which focuses quickly and silently.
The choice between autofocus and manual focus is made by pulling the focus ring back, which reveals the focus scale and activates manual focus without touching the camera menus.
A programmable L-Fn button on the side of the lens, where you can assign the desired function so it is quickly at your fingertips.
