The Nikon Fieldscope ED50 offers a good balance between quality and size. In terms of physical size, the Nikon ED50 is in the same size range as the small Kowa TSN-501, and this complements the aperture of small telescopes. The ED50 is a great option as a travel telescope, for hunters, or as a second telescope alongside a larger telescope, in situations where you want to travel lighter.

The 50 in the model name refers to the diameter of the telescope's objective lens, in this case 50mm. The ED prefix refers to the Extra-Low Dispersion glass used in the telescope. The purpose of ED glass is to minimize chromatic aberration.

The compact 50mm telescope does not lag behind larger telescopes in terms of image quality when viewed during the day and in bright light. The differences to 60mm, 80mm and larger telescopes become clear in low light and difficult conditions.

The 50mm front lens can be fitted with a 55mm filter to protect the lens. Weighing 455 grams, the Nikon FieldScope ED50 is one of the lightest telescopes, making it ideal for handheld viewing. The standard tripod thread on the base allows the telescope to be attached to any tripod or mount with a 1/4" male thread.

Focusing is done with a grooved focus knob located halfway down the telescope body. The focus screw is large enough to fit comfortably under your index finger, so you can adjust focus without taking your eyes off the eyepiece.
