What are Scrim and Flags?
A scrim is a material (usually mesh or silk) placed between a light source and a subject to either reduce light or diffuse (and reduce) light. These come in many shapes, sizes, and constructions depending on the intended use. Scrims can be solid-framed or open-edge. Open-edge scrims are designed to be "feathered" to avoid a sharp, noticeable drop at the edges of the frame.

Flags, on the other hand, are opaque and designed to block light from reaching certain areas of the image. Flags can be used to create very precise effects that cannot be achieved with barn doors or grids, for example.

The choice of material depends on whether the goal is not only to reduce the intensity of the light source but also to diffuse it. Mesh-like scrims reduce the light by a predetermined amount depending on the density of the mesh, but leave the overall nature of the light intact. A hard light source can be hard, but its effect is reduced when a scrim is placed in front.

Scrims are most often used with light sources that do not vary in intensity, such as the sun or large display screens.

• By using black single or double scrim, you can control the highlights of your subject, and thus control the contrast between light and dark areas.
• A 1-stop silky scrim has an effect mainly on the dark areas of the subject, cutting out sharp shadows.
• A 2-stop silk scrim diffuses light, giving you softer and more even tones in your subject.
• A black flag does not let light through, meaning it blocks the light completely. With a black flag, you can prevent light from reaching the areas you want. It also works as a so-called negative fill, where a black surface is brought outside the image. The purpose is to prevent unwanted light reflection and to increase the contrast of the image by deepening the shadows.
