Instax instant film is a self-developing analog system. After exposure, the device's mechanical rollers squeeze a chemical pocket at the bottom of the film, allowing the developer to spread between the light-sensitive layers. The exothermic development process is sensitive to temperature: room temperature is optimal, while cold can distort the tones to bluish and heat to reddish.

The physical size of the film is 86 x 108 mm, of which the actual image area is 62 x 99 mm. The wider aspect ratio encourages horizontal composition. The thick border acts not only as a visual frame, but also as a protective space for the development chemical diffusion channels, protecting the reactive image area from light leaks as soon as it leaves the device.
