Canon's full-frame EOS 5D series of cameras has been a popular choice for professional photographers and enthusiasts for four generations. The Canon 5D borrows features from Canon's flagship 1D series while maintaining a compact size and a more affordable price. The latest body in the series, the 5D Mark IV, is physically the same size as the previous EOS 5D Mark III but has been completely redesigned internally: the image sensor, processor, autofocus are all new and the camera has added additional features such as a touchscreen, GPS, Wifi and improved weather protection.

The Canon EOS 5D IV features a new 30.4-megapixel CMOS sensor . In addition to approximately 30% higher resolution, the sensor also features Canon's Dual Pixel AF technology, which is based on phase-detection pixels on the sensor. Dual Pixel AF works when shooting from the screen, both in video and still images. Dual Pixel AF is a fast autofocus and can also track subjects such as faces. Fortunately for videographers, the focus is continuous and can also be controlled by tapping on the subject on the touchscreen. Because Dual Pixel AF works at the sensor level, it is also very accurate, critical focusing is possible even with very fast lenses with very shallow depth of field.

These extra pixels on the sensor also enable a new feature called Dual Pixel RAW . The data produced by the phase-detection pixels can be saved separately as two 30-megapixel materials, doubling the file size. By opening these large raw images in Canon's Digital Photo Professional software, you can subsequently adjust the image's micro-focus, possible reflections in the image and move the bokeh areas. The autofocus system used through the optical viewfinder is borrowed from the top-of-the-line Canon 1DX II . The camera's 61 focus points are spread over a wider area than before, 41 of which are cross-type focus points. These cross-type focus points work with lenses up to f/8, meaning you can use a 1.4x teleconverter with, for example, the Canon EF 100-400mm F/4-5.6L IS lens. In the center of the viewfinder are 5 dual cross-type focus points, these focus points enable greater autofocus accuracy when using lenses with f/2.8 or faster apertures.

The Canon 5D IV supports 4K video recording at 24 and 30 frames per second. When recording 4K video, a 1.64x magnification is used, which can be useful for nature photography, for example. It is possible to save 8.8 megapixel screenshots from the video, which means that this can be used as a super-fast 30 fps burst in some cases. The video is recorded with Motion JPEG compression at maximum settings with a bitrate of 500Mbps . With this setting, a 64GB memory card can hold about 17 minutes of video, so we also recommend purchasing memory cards that are large enough!

When shooting FullHD video, the entire sensor area is used and H.264 is also a compression option. The previously mentioned Dual Pixel AF works very well in video shooting! The focus speed (i.e. how the focus moves from one object to another) can be adjusted in the settings, the focus obeys the touch screen presses, the ability to track faces or other objects make autofocus easy to use and the video material looks professional. In addition to the microphone connection, the ability to use headphones also helps in video shooting.

With the update, the body has a built-in GPS receiver . Compared to the EOS 6D, for example, the GPS is more usable: now you can choose whether the positioning is on all the time or whether it starts when you turn on the camera, which improves battery life. Wireless image transfer and remote image capture are possible using Wifi and NFC connections. The Canon EOS 5D M4 takes about 900 images on a single charge. The camera uses an LP-E6N battery.
