Which speaker should I choose?

Genelec's smaller 8010 and 8020 series speakers are designed for short listening distances. It is most optimal if the monitors can be placed at a distance of about 0.5-1 meter—for example, on a desktop. With a small speaker, the optimal listening distance is shorter, while a larger speaker produces higher sound pressure and allows for a longer listening distance. The larger 8030, 8040, and 8050 series speakers can also be used as so-called living room speakers. Here is a rough selection guide:

  • Genelec 8010 series: listening distance 0.5-1m. Not recommended for distances over 1.5m.
  • Genelec 8020 series: listening distance 0.8-1.5 meters. Not recommended for distances over 2m.
  • Genelec 8030 series: listening distance max 2 meters. Also suitable as a listening room speaker.
  • Genelec 8040 series: for studio use up to 1.7m distance or as a listening room speaker.
  • Genelec 8050 series: for studio use over 1.5m distance or as a listening room speaker.

How should I position the speaker?

Every space carries sound in its own way. For this reason, it is difficult to give a universal instruction. However, here are a few tips.

In an optimal situation, the speaker is placed at ear level—usually about 1.2-1.4 meters above the floor. The speaker can also be placed slightly higher and aimed downwards, which helps reduce sound reflections from the floor surface. However, it is not advisable to tilt the speaker more than 15 degrees. Monitors should always be aimed directly toward the listening position.

If possible, place the speaker no more than 60cm from the wall in front of the listening position. Placing it further away can increase echoes from the wall surface, especially at low frequencies.

In a 2.1 speaker system, the optimal place for subwoofer placement is twenty to thirty centimeters to the side of the left or right front speaker, on the floor near the wall. 

Do I need anything else besides the speaker?

Usually, some kind of stand is needed. Plan the speaker's placement in the space in advance so that you can aim the speaker toward the listening position and position and/or tilt it to approximately ear height. Choose a table stand, floor stand, or wall mount accordingly.

Genelec's professional series speakers have XLR connectors, and the speaker is typically connected to a preamplifier, media center, or audio interface using either an XLR connection or RCA connectors.
