The Thypoch 21mm F1.4 is a fast wide-angle lens for the Leica M mount. The wide angle is suitable for traditional landscape photography, but it is a more versatile focal length than its reputation suggests, rewarding those who get close enough to their subject. In addition, the fast F1.4 aperture helps control depth of field and also enables shooting in low light.

It includes solutions found in more expensive Leicas, such as a floating focus group, so the image quality is as good as possible at different distances without the focus shift phenomenon.

The appearance is very traditional and the lens body has dot-marked focus zones at different apertures. The optics themselves include modern coatings, special lenses such as 3x HRI, 3x ED and 2x Aspherical lens elements.

This is quite large for a rangefinder camera lens, but it is in the same class as alternative super-fast zooms such as the Leica Summilux-M 21mm F1.4 and the Voigtländer Nokton 21mm F1.4.

But what about the most important thing, what do the pictures taken with this look like? The resolution and sharpness are good at full aperture, but the detail improves by stopping down a stop or two. The lens has no less than 14 rounded diaphragm blades, so the background remains nice even at different apertures.

Thypochin is owned by DZO, a manufacturer of cinema lenses, and this foundation is reflected in Thypochin's products, meaning that instead of raw resolution, the images taken with the lens have a certain sound and their own way of drawing. On the other hand, the previously mentioned modern structures and coatings are used, meaning the lens has an attractive combination of sharpness, character and brightness.

The closest focusing distance is only 23cm, meaning that focusing is done from the screen, while focusing with the viewfinder starts at a normal distance of 70cm. Like Leica lenses, this is clearly noticeable when focusing, meaning that this is not done accidentally, but no separate macro switch is needed. The aperture ring can be adjusted to eliminate clicks, meaning this is also suitable for video production.
