Sigma's 56mm F1.4 DC DN completes Sigma's line of fast prime lenses. Like the previous Sigma 16mm and 30mm models, this lens is also a new design, specially made for mirrorless cameras. The end result is a very compact size for its speed, sharp detail across the entire image area and fast autofocus. The autofocus motor used is also quiet and well suited for video shooting.
The Sigma 56mm f1.4 Contemporary is designed for Sony's APS-C sensor size cameras like the a6500, but the lens will also fit full-frame cameras like the a7 if the intention is, for example, to shoot 4K video with a crop setting.
The Sigma 56mm focal length is equivalent to about 84mm in cine format, this combined with the large F1.4 aperture allows for control over depth of field. Thanks to the rounded diaphragm blades, the area outside the depth of field is beautifully soft and the focus object stands out from the background. The Sigma 56mm is therefore a top choice for portrait photography or if you want to enhance your images by controlling the depth of field. In addition to fast autofocus, focus can be adjusted using the large and textured focus ring.
The Sigma 56mm has a construction of ten lens elements in six groups. It uses two aspherical lens elements and one Super Low Dispersion lens element. The lens uses a multi-layer coating to enhance contrast and reduce reflections. The bayonet is made of durable brass and is also surrounded by a rubber seal, which makes the Sigma's construction dust and weather resistant.
