Sigma's most popular lens has now been updated!
According to initial tests, the lens is a perfect match! Kameraliike.fi received the lens even before the release and the device has been lent to professional photographers to try out. The Sigma 24-70mm II has already been used in real life, for example, to shoot a music video. It is a lens that offers image quality approaching the G-Master series, is mechanically of very high quality and is surprisingly light and small considering its features. Strong recommendation! Why is a new model needed? Camera megapixel counts continue to increase, and autofocus speeds on many bodies are at a completely different level than they were a few years ago. Sigma promises that the 24-70mm Art II will have sharper image quality, be faster at focusing, and be lighter and smaller than the previous model.
The Sigma 24-70mm DG DN is part of the manufacturer's Art series, meaning image quality is the number one goal in the design. The construction is also durable and feels very high quality in the hand and can withstand professional use. The weight is lower than the previous model, but metal is used in parts that require durability, such as the zoom mechanism, and Sigma emphasizes the lens' longevity and reliability as a tool.
Image quality is now better across the entire focal length range. In addition to raw sharpness, what's also important is how the image looks, i.e. how smoothly the subject moves from sharp to background and what kind of bokeh appears in the background.
There are a bunch of special lenses, including 6 FLD glass elements, 2 SLD glass elements, and 5 aspherical elements. These special lenses minimize sharpness and color aberrations such as lateral chromatic aberration, which is difficult to remove in post-processing.
The zoom ring and focus ring have an excellent feel, precise with suitable damping. The focus ring works linearly and with a travel of about one revolution, this means very smooth manual focusing and the use of Follow focus systems in video shooting is also possible.
For video shooting, the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II has a very minimal amount of focus breathing, i.e. the change in focal length when focusing. This means that the image does not move in a disturbing way when the focus changes!
The autofocus was already quite fast in the previous version, but now there is a new, faster focus motor and the lens also takes full advantage of the new Sony bodies.
The Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II Art is weather sealed against dust and splashes of water. The joints between moving parts are protected by multiple seals, not just on the bayonet side.
The lens is made of metal and Sigma's lightweight plastic alloy, meaning the weight has been kept under control, but all parts that are subject to mechanical stress are durable and metal. The bayonet is made of brass, which means the lens mount is very precise even after years of use.
