The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 is a fast L-Mount zoom lens for APS-C sensor size that produces image quality comparable to prime lenses. The Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 was a unique lens and there is still nothing like it from other manufacturers and these have been used a lot with adapters with Panasonic M43 bodies, for example. But now Sigma itself makes an updated and better version: the weight, mechanical quality, image sharpness and autofocus are clearly improved compared to the original. And best of all, you no longer need to use an adapter with the lens.

In addition, the focal length of 17-40mm is a great performance, every millimeter on the wide-angle end makes a visible difference , and now the longer reach on the telephoto end brings versatility. The cine equivalent focal length is about 25.5-60mm, which means that this basically replaces several fixed focal length lenses in one device in terms of brightness and image quality. The lens is a great choice for landscape photography, starry skies and twilight photography due to its brightness, and the telephoto end is also suitable for portrait photography.

If the lens is better than before, so are the cameras. The previous lens sometimes had trouble focusing completely correctly due to the short depth of field, but the new mirrorless Son bodies do not have this problem because focusing is done at the sensor level and the focus points are located across the entire image area.

The Sigma 17-40mm will probably also be popular with videographers. The lens features Sigma's latest HLA focusing motor, which means it keeps up with the autofocus of Panasonic's new bodies. In addition, the so-called focus breathing phenomenon, which is annoying in video shooting, has been minimized.

The length of the lens remains the same when zooming from one extreme position to the other, meaning the package is very sturdy mechanically and there are no sliding tubes exposed where dust can get inside the optics. Because of this, the lens also feels a little smaller in the hand than the technical specifications would suggest! In addition, the center of gravity remains very similar, meaning this works well with gimbals despite its weight.

In terms of usability, the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 is versatile, like the manufacturer's new lenses. The lens has two programmable AF-L buttons on the front for activating the focus feature, for example, and the lens has an aperture adjustment ring with automatic setting and lock.
