The Nikon Z 70-180mm f/2.8 is a completely new lens for Nikon Z series mirrorless system cameras. This is the smallest and lightest F2.8 telephoto zoom lens Nikon has ever made.
The lens follows the popular 28-75mm and 17-28mm lens series: the aperture is fixed at f2.8, the filter thread is 67mm. The focal length is still a bit different from what we are used to, but the goal has been to achieve aperture and compact size without compromising image quality.
Does the lens look familiar? Nikon doesn't say directly, but this lens is most likely made in collaboration with Tamron, as the optical design and other technical specifications are the same as Tamron's very popular 70-180mm lens.
Tamron's version was previously only available as Sony compatible. But now the same treat would be available to Nikon photographers as well. Thanks to the long-standing cooperation, there will certainly be no problems with compatibility, so all the features of Nikon cameras work with the lens:
The lens weighs only 795g, for comparison the Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 S weighs almost one and a half kilos. The lens forms a balanced whole with e.g. the Z6 series body even without the battery grip. Even fast moving subjects can be tracked with ease.
The Nikon 70-180mm F2.8 uses a completely new VXD focusing motor, of which there are two in the lens. According to the manufacturer, focusing is very fast and accurate.
The lens' closest focusing distance at the telephoto end is approximately 85cm, and at the 70mm focal length it is possible to focus down to a distance of up to 27cm (without autofocus). The Nikon 70-180mm does not replace traditional macro, but it does open up many new possibilities for close-up photography!
