The Hoya ND II Variable is a new version of Hoya's high-quality variable ND filter. Multi-coated, excellent for both still and video photography.

The adjustable grey filter consists of two overlapping polarizing optical glasses that can be rotated to adjust the amount of darkening. Adjustment is easily done by turning the adjustment knob.

The Hoya Variable Density filter is ND3 - ND400, meaning that the filter can reduce light steplessly by 1.5 - 9 stops. This gives you greater freedom of choice in choosing the aperture and shutter speed, without having to use the smallest apertures on the lens.

For still photography, the adjustable ND filter lets you control exposure to achieve slower shutter speeds to suit your creative purposes.

An adjustable gray filter is an important tool in video shooting. It helps to control depth of field and image sharpness by better controlling aperture and shutter speed. In video shooting, the shutter speed is normally twice the frame rate. So, in 24 frames per second, the exposure time in movie mode is normally 2 x 24 = 48, or about one fiftieth of a second. With a gray filter, this rule can be maintained more easily or you can create your own more artistic effects in the video.

The Hoya ND II Variable front lens thread can be fitted with a lens cap that is one size larger than the original filter size. This filter expands forward, thus minimizing vignetting.

Another advantage of an adjustable ND filter is that you don't need to carry around many different ND filters.
