The GoPro Hero is now at version 12, which means it's a truly polished product. The power management has now been updated, meaning battery life is up to 2x better, and the acclaimed HyperSmooth stabilization has been updated to version 6.0.
Battery life is important in these devices; in the middle of an activity, a sporting event, or when attached to the most unusual locations, running out of battery always means the end of filming. You can also use Bluetooth headphones and microphones directly with the Hero 12, so for example Apple AirPods can act as a microphone and for audio monitoring. The image sensor is the same larger version as in version 11, but the HDR feature that captures images vividly has been updated and works in 5.3K and 4K video and when taking photos.
This is the same size and lens as the previous version, so all accessories and mounts are compatible.
Better battery life: up to 100% improvement in 5.3K 60P and 4K 120P video, with an improvement of around 15% at 4K 60 and 30, meaning the optimization is targeted at specific video settings. Part of the difference is also due to better thermal management, meaning the camera can continue shooting significantly longer. The battery is the same as in previous models.
HyperSmooth 6.0 and expanded AutoBoost: Stabilization works really well in the new GoPro cameras, and now this technology has received updates. Autoboost can adjust the electronic stabilizer's cropping as needed, and now the video image is cropped as little as possible. GoPro says that HyperSmooth processes four times more data than the previous version. There will definitely be test videos of this later.
GP-Log: wide gamut recording. This is suitable for those who process their videos, the camera records the entire gamut as widely as possible and gets the most out of the image when editing. In addition, GoPro publishes Lut files to speed up color definition and preview.
Max Lens Mod 2.0 compatible: With the accessory, you can use 4K 60P with a wide angle of view. In the previous model and the first version of Max Mod, the maximum resolution was 2.7K.
Bluetooth headphones as a microphone : You can connect Bluetooth devices and, for example, headphones that work both for sound monitoring and as an external microphone. You can also give voice commands to the camera via Bluetooth headphones. And because the range can be long and works even through a window, the camera can be outside the car, for example, and the sound can be performed inside the video! The Bluetooth mic and the track recorded by the camera also remain separate, so you can record ambient sounds or backup sounds in case of microphone connection problems at the same time.
Video preview while recording: For some reason, this feature was missing for several generations of devices. But now it works, meaning you can preview the camera image while recording is on!
Built-in tripod thread: In addition to the standard foldable Gopro mount, the Hero 12 includes a standard tripod thread
HDR video recording: GoPro has had an HDR setting for recording a wider tonal range in photos, and the same is also available for video recording at all resolutions.
More 8:7 shooting modes: The Hero 11 featured a larger, almost square sensor, and the same technology is used in this new model. Now, full-sensor recording works with Star trails and Timelapse modes
Night Effects photos: In B-roll shooting, the super cool Vehicle Trails mode or the previously mentioned Star Trails also save the final photo with the effect. A nice addition to content production. If the names of the features seem strange, it's worth checking out the vehicle trails shooting mode, you can shoot really great images in urban environments in low light almost automatically.
TimeCode: Timecode allows you to synchronize multiple cameras in multi-camera productions
Interval photo mode: A bit like timelapse, but the images can be exposed better in changing conditions, meaning the exposure and other settings respond better, while timelapse is intended to be compiled into a smooth video.
No GPS receiver: This is the only bad thing, the new Hero 12 does not include a GPS receiver, so for example, speed recording is not possible. If this is important, the Hero 11 is a better option.
Easier shooting of vertical videos: A handy feature for Tiktok and reels photographers, you can get vertical videos faster by selecting them in the settings
As usual, the camera does pretty much everything the previous models do, so the list is pretty extensive. Here are some of our favorite features:
Hyperview: no longer super, but hyper offers an even wider angle of view, which gives videos a whole new sense of speed. However, the amount of distortion is also on a whole new level, so this feature should be used with caution.
Front screen: Very capable for vlogging and framing images if the camera is in an awkward position. No need to reach behind the camera or check on your phone. Much faster screen refresh than the Hero9 model.
Tone mapping in videos: HDR works smarter and smooths out contrast differences regionally. The result is a beautiful yet natural-looking HDR video. Previously, this feature was only available in SuperPhoto photo mode.
5K resolution. The higher resolution works with different cropping (i.e. wide setting and linear setting that does not distort the image). Stabilization also works with 5K resolution. Resolution is never a problem and a 5K image also withstands cropping better in editing.
TimeWarp 3.0: Extremely smooth timelapse videos, you can also seamlessly combine real-time video with audio between timelapses, so you get a stunning effect with little effort.
Webcam mode and live streaming. Now you can have the most exciting adventures of your life and even video conferences for work with the same device. Also works great as a second camera for live streaming productions. Compatible with Youtube, Facebook and Twitch.
HindSight: like a dash cam, the camera is on all the time but starts recording from 30 seconds before you press the rec button! Very handy when you catch a cool trick or event but don't want to record unnecessary footage to fill up your memory card. Battery consumption is the same as when recording all the time, so it works best when you want to minimize unnecessary footage.
Scheduled capture: You can schedule the camera to start recording video, timelapse or photography. Want great footage of the sunrise from a hiking trip but want to sleep in in the morning? This will do the trick.
Duration capture : You can define how long the camera will record after it starts.
The sales package includes:
The sales packaging also serves as a transport bag
The sales package does not include a memory card. We recommend Sandisk Extreme Pro A2 microSD cards for the Gopro Hero 12 camera. These have sufficient speed and reliability, in our experience, are excellent.
