The most obvious differences between the different softbox shapes (Square, Rectangular, Octagon, Hexadecagon) are in how they reflect the shape of the light source back. That is, how the shape of the light source appears, for example, in the eye of the person being photographed or, in product photography, on the surface of a shiny bottle. An octagonal softbox provides a rounder reflection on the subject's eyes than a square one. This kind of reflection looks more natural.
