This is what you've been waiting for! These professional-grade super telephotos are designed and tested with such care that development cycles are long. Sony already has the FE 400mm and 600mm super telephotos, and now all the major focal lengths are covered in the series.
The Sony FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS features two XD Linear focus motors, which is the latest technology from the manufacturer. Lenses of this level are used to capture unique events, whether it's on a camera booth in the wilderness or in a stadium shooting sports or major events, and the focus must work reliably because the occasions are not repeated. There's not much else to note about the focus, it's fast, quiet, it just works.
The image quality can also be described in the same way, there is little to complain about. The sharpness across the entire image area is top-notch, color errors are minimized, and the image is pleasant to look at. There is no vignetting or distortion.
The Sony 300mm F2.8 G Master weighs 1470 grams, making it the lightest lens in its class on the market. This means that the lens also works well when shooting handheld or with a light monopod. It also offers faster handling and makes it easier to track moving subjects, for example.
Weight is part of this equation and the other part is the center of gravity. Like modern super telephoto lenses, most lenses are located at the back of the lens and the center of gravity is well on the support arm, meaning the combination with the camera feels smaller and the lens doesn't feel front-heavy when panning.
The rest of the lens's user interface is at the usual professional lens level, with four so-called Focus hold buttons around the front that provide instructions. The buttons can be used to control the focus to a preset distance or activate another function.
The image stabilizer can be attached directly to the lens buttons and has three different modes: 1. normal, 2. panning, and 3. a mode that makes it easier to follow fast movement, which keeps the framing as close as possible to what the final image will be.
A two-way switch, which resembles a focus ring, allows you to toggle a feature in both directions, such as APS-C cropping on and off or two focus distances, and by turning the switch back and forth, you can achieve a smooth focus shift between two subjects, for example when shooting video.
The tripod collar is integrated and cannot be removed, it can be rotated, meaning you can take portrait or handheld shots without the handle getting in the way, and it can be attached to the tripod and removed.
The 300mm F2.8 is fully compatible with Sony's 1.4X and 2X teleconverters.
The Sony 300mm F2.8 is weather-sealed. The lens also features the same solutions as its bigger brother models, i.e. the bayonet is attached to the lens extra firmly, meaning the package with the camera is sturdy. Despite its lightness, the internal structure is very durable for daily use.
Note: This product is not compatible with the separately purchased Sony 2-year extended warranty.
