The Genelec 8040B is a step into the heavyweight category. When the performance of the smaller models is good but you need more bass extension and higher sound pressure levels without a separate subwoofer, the 8040B is the natural choice.
This model has become a global standard in recording studios, post-production facilities, and demanding home theaters. It offers acoustic authority and a wide frequency response, yet remains compact enough to be placed on speaker stands or a sturdy desk.
Available in four finishes: studio-friendly dark grey, black, a more decor-friendly white, and the rugged RAW (untreated aluminum).
The Genelec 8040B is designed for both nearfield and mid-field monitoring. The larger enclosure and 6.5" driver move air in a way that can be physically felt.
Although the 8040B is still considered "compact", it requires a sturdy stand or desk beneath it.
Wide Sweet Spot and DCW™ Waveguide
Genelec's patented DCW™ (Directivity Control Waveguide) is seamlessly integrated into the enclosure design. It perfectly matches the drivers to each other and controls the sound directivity. In practice, this means:
Wide listening area: You can move around the mixing console or on the sofa without the stereo image collapsing or the sound color changing drastically.
Fewer room reflections: The controlled directivity helps keep the sound clear even in acoustically challenging spaces by reducing reflections from the side walls.
Because the speaker's goal is neutral reproduction, it must be adaptable to different rooms. The rear panel features versatile tone controls:
Bass Tilt: If the speaker is placed near a wall or in a corner, the bass will naturally be boosted due to the laws of physics. With the Bass Tilt switches (-2, -4, or -6 dB), you can cut this boominess and restore a balanced frequency response.
Desktop Control: This setting attenuates the 160 Hz boost caused by a desk surface or mixer meter bridge by 4 dB, significantly clarifying the midrange.
Treble Tilt & Bass Roll-Off: Additional adjustments for fine-tuning the treble (+2, -2, or -4 dB) or cutting the lowest bass frequencies.
The 8040B's sound is recognizable: neutral, punchy, and highly resolving. The midrange is extremely clear, making mixing vocals and speech easy. The treble is bright but non-fatiguing.
The biggest difference compared to smaller models is the effortless sound and bass extension. The 8040B produces low frequencies unforced, and there is an authority to the sound that makes a mix sound more complete.
The 8040B cleanly reproduces bass down to about 45 Hz (-3 dB). For most music production (pop, rock, jazz, acoustic), this is entirely sufficient, and no subwoofer is needed.
Purchasing a subwoofer is primarily justified if you are working with heavier electronic music, mixing cinematic LFE channels, or want to reduce the load on the main speakers at high sound pressure levels.
Die-cast Aluminum Enclosure (MDE™): The enclosure is made of die-cast aluminum. It is highly rigid, durable, and acoustically dead. The rounded corners prevent sound diffraction (scattering), which improves the accuracy of the stereo image.
Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS): This technology monitors the signal and automatically switches the speaker to a power-saving standby mode (<0.5 W) when playback stops. It wakes up without delay when you resume listening.
Iso-Pod™ Stand: The included rubber stand isolates the speaker from the surface and allows you to tilt the speaker to the exact right angle towards your ears.
Note: The Genelec 8040B is an active speaker designed for professional use. It does not have its own volume control knob, so connect it to an audio source with adjustable volume (e.g., an audio interface, preamplifier, or DAC). A sensitivity adjustment (-6 dBu to +6 dBu) is located on the rear panel.
