This Canon RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 Dual Fisheye lens is very convenient for shooting 144-degree 3D VR video footage. According to a press release from Canon Japan, this is also Apple Vision Pro certified, meaning it is suitable for producing content on Apple's new device.
This is specifically designed for the Canon EOS R7, meaning the cine equivalent is approximately 6.2mm. This is a lighter version of Canon's previous 5.2mm Dual Fisheye lens for the APS-C sensor size.
The distance between the lenses is 60mm, which produces a natural-looking image for VR glasses. The Canon RF-S 3.9mm also includes autofocus, but for video recording, One Shot AF or manual focus is used.
Because the lens produces two fisheye images on the camera sensor at the same time, post-processing is very easy because the video files are always in sync with each other. Canon has released two free tools for video file pre-processing: the EOS VR utility program and the EOS VR plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro software.
The reduction in technology and price, combined with a smart work culture, makes 3D VR photography possible for everyone. For example, for nature photography, travel, and advertising, you can now easily create attention-grabbing and realistic material.
The Canon RF-S 3.9mm is not an L-series lens, but it is the only one that does not use Air Sphere Coating. This is important so that despite the wide focal length, there is no problem with reflections.
