The Canon RF 100-300mm F2.8 is a new version of the legendary EF 300mm F2.8. Canon didn't just make a new bayonet version of the old lens, but the structure and idea are now new. Instead of a fixed focal length, they have achieved a 100-300mm zoom in the same size class without sacrificing the brightness!
The 100-300mm focal length allows for quick response to shooting situations and the high aperture makes it great for shooting concerts and indoor sports, for example. The lens is compatible with the RF series teleconverters:
The Canon RF 100-300mm F2.8 is the manufacturer's first lens to feature two Nano USM focus motors . The USM and STM focus motors control two different groups of elements, achieving much faster operation and very good image resolution at all focal lengths and focusing distances. The focus elements are located behind the tripod collar next to the bayonet, meaning the center of gravity remains the same even when shooting handheld.
There is a Focus Preset button on the back of the lens, which can also be used with the right hand. This button can be programmed to, for example, a specific focus distance and the camera can be activated to focus at this point by pressing the button. The button can also be used as a programmable L-Fn button with a switch, which can be used to adjust different camera settings or focus modes. There are more of these Lens function buttons around the front of the lens.
In addition, like RF lenses, there is a programmable control ring for adjusting aperture or exposure compensation, for example.
The Canon 100-300mm F2.8 includes a 5.5-stop effective image stabilizer, which also works together with the EOS R cameras' in-body stabilizer, for a combined effect of 6 stops. The stabilizer's power and fast response are enabled by the new RF mount, while in EF series lenses such as the EF 300MM F2.8L II the maximum was four stops.
The lens is made in Japan.
