The FujiFilm GFX 100S is a medium format system camera that offers interesting possibilities. The image sensor size is 44x33mm, which is 70% larger than a full-frame film sensor. As the name suggests, it has 102 megapixels, which means that this surpasses all film-format systems in resolution and the closest equivalents can be found in separate digital cameras.

However, the size of the camera is reasonable compared to the features, i.e. not much heavier than other professional bodies, it comes with advanced autofocus, image stabilization that moves the sensor and even 4K video recording. This was an unprecedented idea before the release of the GFX 100S.

Since the sensor is clearly larger than the film size in terms of physical size (43.8x32.9mm) , the film equivalents of the focal lengths can be calculated by a factor of 0.79x. The sensor's maximum sensitivity range is very wide, ISO 50-102400, and images can be recorded in a medium format style with 16bit color depth. Thanks to the powerful processor, continuous shooting is possible at a rate of two frames per second and up to 5k per second when recording JPG images.

Internal image stabilization

The Fuji GFX 100S's image stabilization helps when shooting handheld, and you get the most out of the 102 million pixels and Fujinon lenses. The stabilizer also works in conjunction with the stabilizers found in the lenses, and the power is maintained even at longer focal lengths. Effective stabilization is a big part of how this body has become a replacement for film cameras, when shooting without a tripod in even a little bit of darkness, the image files would reveal that the camera's full potential cannot be used, the resolution is so merciless at these readings.

The body stabilizer also enables the Pixel Shift Multi-shot feature. In this case , the camera takes up to 16 RAW images and moves the image sensor 0.5 pixels at a time between images. These images are assembled into a very high-resolution 400 megapixel file. Each image also stores only one primary color, red, green or blue, so in addition to the resolution, the color information is more accurate.

Advanced autofocus

The autofocus system includes 425 focus points , covering a very large area of the image. The focus points can be selected using the thumb joystick or by pressing directly on the touchscreen. The camera also features Fuji's excellent eye detection technology, the focus system automatically detects the face and eyes of the subject being photographed, and focuses on these.

The autofocus processor is borrowed from the X-T4 and the performance is decent. Focus point selection is done with a new 8-way controller.

Video recording

Medium format cameras and video production have not been in the same sentence before Fuji. Due to the number of pixels, the video image is obviously created by leaving some of the pixels out of the image information. But thanks to this, the video image is created from the entire sensor area and not from a specific crop image. This also gives the video image a nice medium format feel and a narrow depth of field.

The bitrate and recording codecs are also a direct loan from the X-T4 model, which is a favorite of hybrid photographers, i.e. those who combine photography and video production. 4K video is recorded at 10bit color depth directly to the memory card, but the camera can also record 12bit raw video to an external recorder such as the Atomos Ninja V.

Switching between photography and video mode is done directly with a dedicated switch.

Top-notch usability

Fast and logical usability is accompanied by the previously mentioned joystick, but with a smaller size than the previous top model and a weight of only 900g, the GFX 100S is now a truly go-anywhere camera. Nature photographers don't have to worry about the weight of their equipment and choose between image quality and the amount of stuff they can carry. There is a clear display on the top of the body, where you can see the most important settings.

The Fuji body fits well in the hand, with a high-quality rubber coating for protection and improved grip. The surface and shaped handle make it easy to use with one hand.

The Fuji GFX 100S is a powerful professional camera, but it comes with the same JPG settings as lighter bodies. Fuji's JPG images are highly praised for their tonal range and quality, meaning that for fast-paced catalog shooting, for example, with the right settings, you can create a ready-to-use image straight away.
