Best 35mm lens for Sony? The short answer is yes, and the longer version is next.
Sony's new lens is very similar to the popular 24mm F1.4 GM lens, with excellent image quality right at full aperture and across the entire image area. The spread of point-like light sources at the edges of the image, known as coma, has also been effectively eradicated, making it ideal for shooting starry skies or nighttime cityscapes at full aperture.
No distortion or chromatic aberration, the latest anti-reflective coating. Like modern optics, Sony includes several special lenses and coatings, which allows for image quality that can withstand even the strictest scrutiny, and the filter thread is still a reasonable 67mm. In terms of resolution, this lens is very sufficient for high-megapixel bodies like the Sony A7R IV.
Autofocus is very fast, using Sony's best focusing motors. According to initial tests, the lens has some focus breathing, which can be significant for video shooting. But for still photography, the Sony 35mm F1.4 lens has nothing to complain about.
Manual focus also works well, the focus ring is suitably damped to improve feel. The focus adjustment is linear focus and has a range of 160 degrees from one extreme to the other.
Like other G Master lenses, the lens has a programmable Focus Hold button on the side. Aperture control is achieved directly from the lens's control ring, and this can be used with or without aperture clicks if desired, for example when adjusting the aperture during video recording.
The Sony FE 35mm F1.4 is weather-sealed. It comes with a protective bag and a lens hood.
