The Sony FE 24mm 1.4 GM is a lightweight, fast, and high-quality wide-angle lens. In addition to sharp detail, the lens was designed with usability in mind. The lens is lighter and more compact than similar fast 24mm wide-angle lenses from other manufacturers. The lens weighs only 445 grams and the filter thread has a very reasonable diameter of 67mm. Thanks to its lightness and center of gravity, the lens is ideal for professional video production with a gimbal stabilizer.

Despite its compact size, the image quality is guaranteed to be of the G Master flagship series. The image is sharp even at the full f/1.4 aperture, even at the edges of the image field. In addition to edge definition, reflections from point-like light sources are minimized. This makes the lens ideal for stargazing and, for example, shooting twilight cityscapes.

When you combine the lens's wide angle, top-class brightness, and the effective image stabilization found in Sony A7 III and A9 bodies, for example, this lens can handle handheld shooting in almost any conditions!

The Sony 24mm 1.4 GM focuses very close to the wide angle, the shortest focusing distance is 24cm . This, combined with the 11 rounded diaphragm blades, allows for impressive close-ups where the background is beautifully soft, the images look as if the focal length used was a much longer focal length. Even at longer distances from the subject, for example when taking a portrait of a person, the 1.4 aperture is enough to soften the background and separate the subject from it.

The lens has a large and tactile focus ring, and manual focus correction is also possible when using autofocus. The lens has a Focus Hold button for locking focus. In addition to the focus ring, the lens has an aperture ring. The physical clicks of the aperture ring can be turned off with a dedicated button (a great feature for videographers). Autofocus works silently and quickly with the Direct Drive Supersonic Motor (DDSM) focus motor, which Sony says is about three times more powerful than previous models. Sony's extremely convenient EyeAF eye-detection focus and fast continuous focus are used in video shooting.

The Sony 24mm 1.4 G Master optical construction consists of 13 elements in 10 groups. Two XA (extreme aspherical) aspherical lens elements are used, which keep the optical error coma (light rays appearing as a tail-like reflection instead of a point) particularly well under control, which is great for shooting starry skies and the northern lights. Three of the elements are ED lenses that reduce distortion. To minimize reflections, the lenses use a Nano Ar coating. The outer lens elements have a fluorine coating that repels dirt and makes cleaning easier.

Like other G-Master lenses, the Sony 24mm F1.4 is dust and weather sealed.
