Lighter and smaller in size, but surprisingly big in features! The Sony 16-25mm is a mini-sized performer thanks to its slightly more limited focal length, but there has been no compromise on brightness or image quality.
Sony has two named lens series, the top-level G Master and the low-end G, and their lenses that do not have a separate named series. This G-model lens does not fall far short of the G Master, meaning the image quality is okay according to initial tests and, for example, the autofocus speed also remains with the A9 Mark III camera.
Sony uses the same XD focus motors as in telephoto lenses, and there are two of these in the lens.
The closest focusing distance is only 18cm at 24mm focal length, which means you can get surprisingly close with this. This is of course not a true macro lens, but it offers new angles and possibilities. The image quality is also maintained and the autofocus works quickly, which is not always a given with short focal lengths.
In addition to speed, the new focus motors are very quiet, meaning there is no extra noise on the soundtrack. The aperture ring is located directly on the lens and the clicks between apertures can be turned off, meaning aperture adjustment is also possible during video recording.
When changing the focal length, the focus stays very close to the right place, and on the other hand, it is easier for the camera to make a small change in focus quickly.
The Sony 16-25mm weighs only 410g, which means it can be easily balanced with gimbals.
Manual focus is linear, meaning that if follow focus is used, the operation is always the same, meaning that planning the focus is easier and it is always repeatable from shot to shot.
In addition to the lens hood, the lens comes with a zippered, padded protective case for the lens.
The weather-resistant construction and outer lens surfaces are coated to repel dirt.
