Sigma's new fast 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art is part of Sigma's prestigious Art series. A fixed wide-angle lens that is at home in low light and at full aperture. Suitable for demanding landscape photography.
The lens is designed specifically for astrophotography and night photography, but its focal length and aperture are suitable for all wide-angle photography. This DG DN model is made for mirrorless full-frame cameras, meaning it is smaller and better than the previous model.
Sigma's marketing material puts a lot of emphasis on stargazing, but this is a fast, high-definition 24mm lens for everything, from more traditional landscapes to indoor photography and of course video. But if you're looking to shoot nightscapes, starry skies and the northern lights in low light, then you've found the right lens.
The aperture can be adjusted automatically by the camera or manually using the adjustment ring, like traditional prime lenses. The focus ring has a good feel and is rubber-coated. The focus ring can be used to turn the camera on/off, which is a good feature for landscape photography. A normal filter can be placed on the filter thread in front of the lens and a gelatin filter can be placed behind the lens.
The aperture ring control switch allows you to choose either the camera's dominant aperture setting, or use the apertures in clear increments, or choose the stepless aperture setting, which is especially useful for video shooting.
The lens has some focus breathing, meaning you may want to avoid focusing from one extreme to the other when shooting video. The focusing speed is quite good, and this supports the focusing capabilities of Sony's new bodies.
The image quality is okay with this lens. Sharpness is good right at full aperture and even when stopped down a bit, the edges of the image are sharp. Some of the geometry corrections are made directly in the camera, but even without corrections, the distortions are well controlled.
Even with a wide angle, you can see the depth of field, especially when the light intensity is this good and if you get close to the subject. The bokeh is very pleasant and invites you to get close.
