Nikon already had a 50mm F1.8 S lens for mirrorless cameras, so now they've released a faster 1.4 version - but the price without promotional offers is cheaper here! The size and weight are about the same, as is the 62mm filter thread.
But there are also differences: the F1.8 S version has more special lenses, two ED and two aspherical, and here only one aspherical. This lens has a manual focus ring and a programmable control ring. Both have weather protection, but the S-series is probably more effective. The F1.8 S includes the latest Nano Crystal Coat, which is missing from this faster model.
So what does this mean? Thanks to special lenses, edge definition can be better in the F1.8 S version and certain distortions have been minimized. In the harshest backlighting, there may be slightly better control of reflections.
But then this Nikon Z 50mm F1.4 brings an extra 2/3 stop for shooting in low light or if you need to freeze more hectic movement, while at the same time the depth of field is a bit narrower when needed for images. It is also interesting to see the first tests because the design of lenses is not always just about finding the most neutral and flawless image, but sometimes it is also great to see character in the optics.
And as usual, the image quality is great and the raw resolution increases when you stop down the lens by an aperture or two.
And the price: this is the cheapest F1.4 lens released by a camera manufacturer that can be found in the product information of the Camera Shop, which is closer to the products of Sigma or Tamron.
