Leica SL2 or SL2-S?

Leica now has two bodies with the same body but slightly different technical features. If you want to get the full resolution out of Leica's quality lenses, for example in landscape or architectural photos, the previous 47.3 megapixel SL2 is a good option. But for more versatile photography or if you want to try out the possibilities of video between taking photos, this SL2-S is a very good compromise between resolution and material control.

For those who need resolution, there is a solution if the subject of the image is still: the camera has the highly praised multishot mode, the camera takes several images by moving the sensor using a stabilizer mechanism, and these images are automatically combined into a 96-megapixel image file !

Precision mechanical quality like Leica

Many camera manufacturers advertise some level of weather protection for their devices, but Leica has to promise IP54 level weather protection, meaning the camera will work even in demanding conditions. The Leica SL2-S is a device for a passionate photographer, the controls are clear and when you pick up the camera you feel the quality of the construction. The camera feels like it was carved from a single piece of metal.

Next, attention is drawn to the buttons that do not have text or functions marked on them. Leica's functions are quite adjustable, so you can program the buttons according to your own preferences, so there is no need for texts or symbols.

Video recording

Leica is traditionally a manufacturer associated with photography, but this SL2-S is also suitable for demanding video use. 4K video is created from all pixels of the entire sensor area using so-called oversampling technology, which means that in principle a final 4K resolution file is created from a 6K image. This means better resolution and less noise in the final result.

Video recording can also be done by saving a 10-bit file with a wider color space, which means more flexibility in post-processing. Leica's L-Log wide color space files can also be loaded into the camera as Lut files, which means you can preview the final result in more detail right in the camera.

A separate software update will also bring the powerful HEVC compression format, allowing you to store more footage on your memory card with better image quality. The update also includes a waveform tool for monitoring image exposure and tones, and automatic Follow Focus.

Both video and still photography modes have their own settings, so you don't have to spend time making adjustments when switching between modes. The Leica is suitable for those who are serious about photography and want to capture, for example, the beautiful light of a landscape, views from a bird's eye view tower, or moments in nature as video clips. And if you're more excited about the possibilities of video, the camera doesn't run out of features!
