The Genelec 8020D delivers sound pressure and bass extension while still fitting on your desktop. Available in four different colors.

For many professionals and enthusiasts, the Genelec 8020D is the perfectly sized nearfield monitor. It offers significantly more sound pressure and bass extension than the smallest 8010 model, yet it remains compact enough to easily fit on a crowded desk or in a small control room.
This model has become a standard, especially in broadcast monitoring, small editing suites, and high-quality home studios. The 8020D delivers reliable and neutral reproduction that translates well to other listening environments.
Available in four finishes: studio-friendly dark grey, black, a more decor-friendly white, and the rugged RAW (untreated aluminum).
The Genelec 8020D is designed for nearfield monitoring, but thanks to its larger power reserve (50W+50W), it can play cleanly from a bit further away than its smaller sibling, the 8010.
Although the 8020D is physically small, it is a serious speaker, not a toy. Its 4-inch bass driver moves enough air to convincingly reproduce the body and impact of music in the nearfield.
Wide Sweet Spot and DCW™ Waveguide
Genelec's patented DCW™ (Directivity Control Waveguide) is integrated into the aluminum enclosure's design. It perfectly matches the drivers to each other and controls the sound directivity. In practice, this means:
Wide listening area: You can move around your desk or turn to a second screen without the sound color changing drastically.
Fewer room reflections: The controlled directivity helps keep the sound clear even in acoustically challenging spaces by reducing reflections from the side walls.
To ensure neutral reproduction exactly in your room, the rear panel of the 8020D features versatile tone controls. With these, you can compensate for the effects of placement:
Desktop Control: This is a critical setting for desktop use. It attenuates the boost around the 200 Hz area caused by the desk surface by 4 dB, significantly clarifying speech and vocals.
Bass Tilt: If the speaker is placed close to a wall or in a corner, the bass will naturally be boosted. With the Bass Tilt switches (-2, -4, or -6 dB), you can cut this boominess and restore a flat frequency response.
Treble Tilt & Bass Roll-Off: Additional adjustments for fine-tuning the treble or cutting the lowest bass frequencies (e.g., when using a subwoofer).
The 8020D's sound is highly resolving, fast, and neutral. It is a tool that does not flatter the recording but strives for truthfulness. The midrange is extremely clear, typical of Genelec.
Compared to the smaller 8010 model, the 8020D sounds larger and more relaxed. The bass reproduction is more solid, making it more pleasant even during longer listening sessions and when simply enjoying music.
The 8020D reproduces bass down to about 60 Hz. For acoustic music, pop, and voice work, this is often more than enough, and a subwoofer is not essential.
However, if you produce electronic music, hip-hop, or sound design for movies, the lowest octaves will be missing. In this case, we recommend supporting the system with a Genelec subwoofer (e.g., 7040A or 7050C), which frees up the main speakers to reproduce the midrange more cleanly and adds a physical bass presence.
Die-cast Aluminum Enclosure (MDE™): The enclosure is made of die-cast aluminum. It is highly rigid, durable, and acoustically dead. The rounded corners are not just a design choice; they prevent sound diffraction (scattering) from the cabinet edges.
Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS): This technology monitors the signal and automatically switches the speaker to a power-saving standby mode (<0.5 W) when playback stops. It wakes up without delay when you resume listening.
Iso-Pod™ Stand: The included stand isolates the speaker from the desk surface and allows you to tilt the speaker to the exact right angle towards your ears.
Note: The Genelec 8020D is an active speaker designed for professional use and does not feature its own volume control knob. Connect it to an audio source that has volume control (e.g., a preamplifier, audio interface, or DAC). The rear panel features a sensitivity trim (-12 dB range) for level matching.
