Fuji's X-series resolution monster! Higher resolution for an APS-C sized sensor than any other manufacturer.
Fuji previously released the X-H2S camera for video production and high-speed shooting, and this new X-H2 is a photographer's version with a similar body. Or a hybrid photographer, as this camera can also shoot 8K video! This sensor makes the most of Fuji's acclaimed lenses.
Fuji named these two cameras with confusingly similar names, but here are the differences and a comparison chart.
The X-H2 is a high-resolution model, for landscape photography and studio photography. As well as for video photography if a higher resolution is important, in fast movement (e.g. panning) this model can show the rolling shutter effect of the sensor and the dynamic range is slightly smaller in video. Features include a 40 megapixel sensor, Pixel Shift multi shot, 8K video and oversampled 6.2 and 4K video.
The X-H2S is a model for those who appreciate speed. For nature and sports photography and demanding video production. Features include 40fps continuous shooting with an electronic shutter, the image is visible in the viewfinder even during continuous shooting. For video shooting, a smaller rolling shutter and probably faster autofocus
The body, viewfinder, memory card slot and are identical in both models. The 15fps burst shooting with mechanical shutter is also the same on both cameras. The features of the cameras overlap a lot, but Fuji has clearly thought about different user groups and then optimized the features to the max!
The sister model Fuji X-H2S introduced the so-called stacked CMOS 5 HS sensor and a new processor. This X-H2 uses a traditional BSI sensor, so the speed is not quite in the same class, but on the other hand the noise of the sensor is slightly lower, which helps especially with such a high pixel count.
In addition to the large 40MP resolution, for the first time in a Fuji X camera there is a multi-shot based on the movement of the sensor. In practice, the camera takes 20 separate images and moves the sensor with pixel-precise movement to different points using the sensor stabilizer motors. With the separate Pixel Shift Combiner software, a 160-megapixel image file is built from these 20 images. This feature requires the use of a tripod and is best suited for product photography or static objects. But with the right object, the function rewards with amazing accuracy!
In addition to the computing power of the fifth-generation processor, the algorithms have also been updated. The Fuji X-H2 includes the same software as the X-H2S, which includes deep learning autofocus. There is no artificial intelligence in the camera as advertised, but the algorithms have been trained on millions of different subject variations.
And this is reflected in the camera's better ability to recognize objects such as vehicles (cars, various airplanes, motorcycles, bicycles, trains), animals (birds, dogs, horses) and of course people (even with masks and glasses).
In addition to face detection, the camera has eye-detection focus, which must be activated separately and can be programmed to work directly with a single button. By moving the focus point, you can choose exactly the right person whose eyes will be focused on.
Adjusting autofocus is made easier with several presets that are suitable for different sports and situations. The Fuji X-H2S includes a very modern and functional focusing system.
As you can see from the feature list, the Fuji X-H2 is not just a device for landscape photographers. There is material here that is really worth using. Now with the resolution, there are pixels left for 8K video recording and that is exactly what Fuji has done. There is also a very good selection of codecs and options include 6.2K and 4K recording formats that are oversampled from 8K material.
Due to the sensor technology, the so-called rolling shutter is more visible in video material than on the X-H2S body.
With this number of pixels, a lot of data is being moved, but Fuji has managed to manage the heat so that at 25 degrees Celsius the recording time is around 30 minutes. This time is extended in cooler conditions or by using Fuji's FAN-001 fan unit.
The CFexpress memory card slot enables completely new recording formats, ProRes 422 HQ offers smooth and easier-to-edit material on a computer, and H.265 is great when the goal is a small but high-quality file.
Fuji's focus on video is also reflected in the brand new Remote Rec function. With a separate handle, you can attach the video to a router via Ethernet or Wifi, and you can control up to four X-H2S or X-H2 cameras via the tablet. You can adjust the zoom (if using powerzoom) and exposure, and copy the video settings to each camera. In principle, you can be the director and cinematographer of your own video production directly from your iPad.
In other words, this X-H2 and X-H2S are the same body. As the title suggests, the goal has been to create a flagship model suitable for work. The body controls are closer to the mid-size models of the GFX series than the previous X-series. The exposure program is selected via the program dial and there is no exposure time adjustment of the retro model.
The electronic viewfinder has been completely redesigned, with a resolution of 5.76 million dots, suitable for a top model, and a refresh rate of 120, ensuring a smooth image. In addition to the electronics, the optical quality is better, with all lens elements used being aspherical. According to Fuji, the viewfinder image is clear even if the eye is not completely centered in the viewfinder, meaning that in fast-paced situations the camera offers a better view! This is difficult to explain in the technical specifications, but you can see it when you use the camera.
The battery can also be charged directly in the camera via a USB-C cable, as well as extending the screen saver time using a power bank.
The Fuji X-H2 is weather-sealed. The body is made of magnesium alloy and sealed against water and dust. The shutter has an estimated lifespan of professional-grade, approximately 500,000 releases.
