Here it is: Fuji's fastest and most feature-rich X-series camera. This is a high-performance device for photography and videography.
A big part of the improvements is the inclusion of Fuji's fifth-generation X-Trans sensor and processor. These are of course visible in burst shooting, but the same technology also speeds up autofocus, improves viewfinder image quality, and of course video capabilities!
The update is so comprehensive that the product text gets very technical. But the same features are also present inside the camera when shooting hobbies or even pets!
Fuji named these two cameras with confusingly similar names, but here are the differences and a comparison chart.
The X-H2S is a model for those who appreciate speed. For nature and sports photography and demanding video production. Features include 40fps continuous shooting with an electronic shutter, the image is visible in the viewfinder even during continuous shooting. For video shooting, a smaller rolling shutter and probably faster autofocus
The X-H2 is a high-resolution model, for landscape photography and studio photography. And also for video photography if a higher resolution is important, in fast movement (e.g. panning) with this model the sensor speed can appear as a rolling shutter effect and the dynamic range is slightly smaller in video. Features include a 40 megapixel sensor, Pixel Shift multi shot, 8K video and oversampled 6.2 and 4K video.
The body, viewfinder, memory card slot and are identical in both models. The 15fps burst shooting with mechanical shutter is also the same on both cameras. The features of the cameras overlap a lot, but Fuji has clearly thought about different user groups and then optimized the features to the max!
Fuji has adopted a so-called stacked sensor technology. Similar technology is also used in top models from other manufacturers such as Nikon and Sony and the benefits are immediately visible in the feature list. This new sensor has a read speed of 4x that of the X-T4 and up to 30x that of the X-Pro1.
The speed is of course evident in the burst mode: you can choose 20, 30 or even 40 fps burst mode when using the electronic shutter. The viewfinder is non-blackout, like the Sony A9, meaning the viewfinder image remains visible throughout the entire sequence: panning or, for example, tracking a bird catching a fish is effortless. In addition to the speed, the cache is larger and you can capture 175-400 raw images at a time before the camera has to save the images to the memory card.
The Fuji X-H2S performs calculations 120 times per second, meaning that even with a 40fps burst, there are two cycles between shots, during which the camera recalculates exposure and focus! In addition to the raw computing power, the algorithms have also been updated. This is particularly evident in the speed of continuous focusing, as the camera cleverly takes into account accelerating movement and predicts the trajectory of the subject.
In addition, there is a so-called deep learning autofocus, such as Canon's praised Dual Pixel AF. There is no artificial intelligence in the camera as advertised, but the algorithms have been trained with millions of different target variations. And this is reflected in the camera's better ability to recognize objects such as vehicles (cars, airplanes, motorcycles, bicycles, trains), animals (birds, dogs, horses) and of course people (even with masks and glasses).
In addition to face detection, the camera has eye-detection focus, which must be activated separately and can be programmed to work directly with a single button. By moving the focus point, you can choose exactly the right person whose eyes will be focused on.
Adjusting autofocus is made easier with several presets that are suitable for different sports and situations. The Fuji X-H2S includes a very modern and functional focusing system.
And now it gets technical! Fuji's XH2S is suitable for even the most demanding user and for example for small production companies or advertising agencies for video shooting.
First, the most interesting: a separate fan can be added to the back of the camera as an accessory, and like Sony, the overheating protection settings can be adjusted. According to initial tests, this does not mean that the camera has any thermal problems.
In tests, 4K 60P video has been recorded for as long as the battery has power without breaks (about 1.5 hours) and 4K 120P video for over 40 minutes at a time. But Fuji has aimed the X-H2S at very demanding users and these additional adjustments guarantee reliability even in countries and conditions warmer than Finland.
The new sensor means better sensor readout speed for video recording, the entire sensor area is recorded during an exposure of up to 1/180, meaning there is no jello or rolling shutter phenomenon in the image under almost any conditions. For comparison, the readout speed is even better than the Sony A7S III model .
The previously mentioned effective stabilizer is a big help when shooting videos. In addition to the mechanical stabilizer, you can use the electronic stabilizer when shooting videos, for example when shooting handheld while walking. The camera also has an IS Boost setting, where the camera tries to stabilize the video as if it were shot from a tripod.
For video shooting, there is a new F-Log 2 Gamma color setting with a wide tonal range. This is suitable for professionals who want to define the color and contrast of the video material themselves. F-Log 2 uses ISO 1250 sensitivity, which means that post-processing for ND filters and noise reduction may be needed. The camera also has the previous F-Log setting, which is a good choice if you don't want to do noise reduction due to the lower minimum ISO. If you don't want to use the full-scale Log setting, the camera has Fuji's Eterna color setting, which provides a good basis for the video colors and of course the praised film simulations.
The CFexpress memory card slot enables completely new recording formats, ProRes 422 HQ offers smooth and easier-to-edit material on a computer, and H.265 is great when the goal is a small but high-quality file.
The camera records 6.2K 30P and 4K 60P video using the entire pixel count of the sensor. 6.2K video is recorded as is and 4K 60P video is oversampled, meaning the entire width of the sensor is used to create a 4K video file. This results in sharper images with less noise and aliasing than 4K video that uses only a portion of the pixels.
Fuji's focus on video is also reflected in the brand new Remote Rec function. With a separate handle, you can attach the video to a router via Ethernet or Wifi, and you can control up to four X-H2S cameras via the tablet. You can adjust the zoom (if using powerzoom) and exposure, and copy the video settings to each camera. In principle, you can be the director and cameraman of your own video production directly from your iPad.
According to Fuji, the X-H2S body has been thoroughly tested, down to the smallest detail. As the title suggests, the goal was to create a flagship model that would be a workhorse. The body's controls are closer to those of the mid-sized GFX series than the previous X-series models. The exposure program is selected via the program dial and there is no shutter speed adjustment like the retro model.
The electronic viewfinder has been completely redesigned, with a resolution of 5.76 million dots, suitable for a top model, and a refresh rate of 120, ensuring a smooth image. In addition to the electronics, the optical quality is better, with all lens elements used being aspherical. According to Fuji, the viewfinder image is clear even if the eye is not completely centered in the viewfinder, meaning that in fast-paced situations the camera offers a better view! This is difficult to explain in the technical specifications, but you can see it when you use the camera.
The battery can also be charged directly in the camera via a USB-C cable, as well as extending the screen saver time using a power bank.
The Fuji X-H2S is weather-sealed in construction. The body is made of magnesium alloy and sealed against water and dust.
