More information about the campaign

Here it is: the new version of the popular Canon EOS R6, the Mark II. The camera has major improvements: the image sensor, continuous shooting and autofocus, and especially the video recording features, have been completely redesigned. This package includes the L-series 24-105mm F4 L IS lens.

In addition to these, there are many small but over time appreciated features and customization that active photographers can make work exactly according to their own wishes and needs, in nature and on the sidelines, and now also better for hybrid photographers in video use.

  • 24 megapixels, ISO 102400
  • 40 fps silent continuous shooting, 12 fps with mechanical shutter. AF works in both
  • RAW Burst continuous shooting with pre-recording and video with 5-second pre-recording
  • Body Stabilizer: Up to 8 stops of stabilization
  • Faster, more advanced Dual Pixel AF II autofocus
  • Focus that recognizes and follows animals, people, and, for example, flying birds
  • Now also vehicle identification and tracking: cars, motorcycles, trains and airplanes
  • Dual Pixel RAW
  • 4K 60P video internally, no time limit. 6K 60P RAW to external recorder
  • UVC webcam streaming directly via USB cable
  • Two UHS-II SD memory card slots

Which one to choose - the original EOS R6 or the EOS R6 Mark II?

But the EOS R6 is a relatively new model, why is the update coming now and who should upgrade? Canon justifies the launch of the new model with the demands of the user base. The competition is fierce and technically flawless photos and videos must be obtained even in the most difficult conditions. The Canon EOS R6 is a camera for active enthusiasts or professionals, the demands on the equipment are high and Canon believes that these features will keep you on top.

If you have an older mirrorless camera, the EOS R or RP will give you a significantly faster performance, a better viewfinder, and a completely different level of continuous shooting and image stabilization. The Canon EOS R6 is a great camera and this new update doesn't change that. But if you plan to shoot more video than before or you shoot fast-paced action, for example, 40FPS continuous shooting or the so-called Eiku function, i.e. burst shooting with pre-recording, can be very attractive.

The Canon EOS R6 includes a new 24.2 megapixel sensor and the standard sensitivity goes up to 102400. The sensor's read speed is faster than before, as can be seen in the burst mode, but according to initial information, this is not implemented with the so-called Stacked technology, which is different from the EOS R3 top model.

Externally, this is mostly identical to the original model: The same powerful battery, the same 8-stop image stabilization that moves the sensor, which is one of the best in the industry, and the same level of weather protection.

Raw power for cartooning

  • Continuous shooting with mechanical shutter 12 fps (for 1000+ JPG, 1000 CRAW or 110 Raw images)
  • Continuous shooting with electronic shutter 40 fps (for 75 RAW or 140 CRAW images)
  • Raw Burst 30FPS pre-recording for 0.3 or 0.5 seconds
  • Improved sensor read speed with electronic shutter
Burst shooting is a brand new feature in Canon SLR cameras. By activating the feature, when you press the shutter button, you can record a series of images for 0.5 seconds in advance, meaning that 15 RAW images are already recorded at the moment the picture is taken! This feature makes it possible to record very fast events, just the right moment when a bird catches a fish or a sports performance in the perfect position.

The feature creates a single file that can be browsed through like a slow-motion video on a camera, and from this, single images can be saved in Raw or JPG quality.

Dual Pixel AF II autofocus

The Canon EOS R5 and R6 featured highly praised autofocus and now this has been further tuned in the direction of the top model EOS R3. The Canon EOS R6 Mark II can recognize people, dogs, cats and birds and now also horses, vehicles such as cars, motorcycles and airplanes. The improvements are not only in the number of species, but the focus reacts more quickly to the subject and reacts better to changes in movement.

Focus and tracking are based on the entire figure, head, face and eyes, depending on how the subject is positioned in the image. Focus also recognizes faces that are off to the side.

These intelligent focus modes cover 100% of the image area, meaning there are no problems tracking subjects between focus points or at the edges of the frame. And there are a lot of pixels that handle focus, 4897 of them, and these operate with the same accuracy and speed all around the sensor.

The autofocus for video shooting has also been borrowed from Canon film cameras, where if the focus cannot find the subject, the focus does not wander but stays in place, for example. This results in a more professional result and, for example, when panning, there is no need to lock the focus to manual mode. Next, more on video shooting.

Video Shooting - The EOS R6 II is the hybrid photographer's choice

  • 4K UHD 60P video recording without cropping, oversampling from 6K footage
  • No 30 minute time limits
  • 6K 60P Prores Raw video recording externally, e.g. to an Atomos Ninja+ recorder
  • Focus Breathing compensation in the camera
  • FullHD 180P slow-motion videos across the entire sensor area
  • False color feature, easy exposure adjustment
  • Microphone and headphone jacks
  • Canon Log 3, and Canon Log with 4:2:2 10-bit recording
  • UVC streaming via USB cable without separate devices
  • Also starting video recording 5 seconds in advance!
  • All AF features also work in video recording

With the increased resolution, the video is also created using oversampling technology, meaning that a larger number of 6K pixels is used to create a 4K video file with more precision and less noise. The sensor speed is reflected in a smaller rolling shutter effect in fast movements.

It also features Focus breathing compensation, which has been praised in Sony bodies, meaning that when you change focus, the image size does not change disturbingly. In addition, a False color tool borrowed from film cameras has been added, which shows midtones and clipping highlights in different colors. This helps you adjust exposure manually precisely. This feature is now available for the first time in a still hybrid camera.

There is no internal Raw shooting or 8K video on this camera, but Canon has clearly understood that people want to shoot video with these cameras, and the restrictions have been reduced and features have been borrowed from more expensive models, like Sony.

Highly effective stabilization, 4K video without time limit and Dual Pixel AF II focus make this camera a great option for professional production. The same camera can handle demanding sports photography and Run&Gun style video shooting.

What about those quick situations? Pre-recording also works for video recording! Press Rec and up to five seconds of material is already recorded.

Usability

  • Movie Switch selection between video and still mode
  • Joystick and thumbwheel plus two selection wheels
  • Apple MFI support
  • Multi Function smart shoe
  • Two UHS-II SD memory card slots
  • Charging via USB-C cable
  • New Camera Connection App

The new Movie switch is a lifesaver in many situations, allowing you to activate video and stills mode with a single switch, regardless of exposure mode. The camera has a huge amount of customization options for the various buttons.

Like Canon, the menus are clear and if the previous model fit in the hand, the same praised design continues here. Most things can be done with one hand without finger exercises.

In addition, there are some new things included, with a Lightning - USB-C cable you can connect your iPhone to this and the transfer of images and videos is very fast. The multi-function hot shoe is familiar from the EOS R3 model and is compatible with Canon's new flashes and accessories. Old flashes can be connected with an adapter as needed.

In addition, the camera has a surprising number of features that make life easier, such as Focus Bracketing, handheld panoramic shots and even full circle shots without restrictions, multiple exposures directly in the camera, and autofocus area selection, which are only found on the EOS R7 and EOS R3 models.

The weather protection is on par with the previous model, making it suitable for travel use in nature.
