The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 is a new version of the original 6K camera and it now sits between the Pro version and the old model. The 6K G2 camera has the same adjustable LCD screen, more powerful battery type and the ability to use the EVF viewfinder as the Pro version. The camera does not include a built-in ND filter like the Pro version.
The Blackmagic Pocket 6K G2 records Raw video directly to CFast memory cards. As its name suggests, the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 is compact and ideal for fast-paced documentary or run-gun shooting. The user interface is top-notch. The large 5-inch touchscreen allows you to quickly change settings.
Aperture can be adjusted with compatible lenses using a separate Iris Wheel or from the touchscreen without any pixels being overexposed. The camera's top panel features dedicated buttons for white balance, sensor sensitivity, shutter angle, and programmable function buttons. There is also a dedicated button for still images.
For slow-motion videos, there is a dedicated High Frame Rate button on the back of the camera. Other physical buttons on the back include zoom, menu button and play button. The Focus button and Iris control button are also located next to the touchscreen, and navigating through menus and other camera features are controlled via the 5-inch Full HD touchscreen.
Versatile connections:
Professionals also appreciate good audio connections. Like the Blackmagic Pocket 6K G2 camera, it has 2 mini XLR audio connections with Phantom 48V support, so a professional-grade shotgun microphone can be connected directly to the device. The camera also has built-in high-quality stereo sound recording. Stereo is recorded with good separation because the camera's design allows the microphones to be placed on different sides of the lens mount.
In addition to the XLR connector and internal microphones, the camera has a 3.5mm mini plug for connecting video microphones, for example. The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 also includes a full-size HDMI connector. In addition to the external recorder, image data can be saved to an external hard drive via the USB-C connection.
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema cameras have always sucked up batteries and for longer gigs you have to have your bags full of batteries. The new 6K G2 now uses more powerful and also very common NP-F (aka L-plate) type batteries instead of Canon's standard batteries.
The Raw workflow is possible with the versatile DaVinci Resolve Studio that comes with the camera (valued at around 300e if purchased separately).
