Telephoto lenses with a focal length of 150-600mm have been popular on devices from many different manufacturers. Now OM System / Olympus is releasing its own alternative. And this 150-600mm of course includes a twist like the other lenses in this system, i.e. the equivalent focal length on compatible cameras is 300-1200mm.
Additionally, the lens is compatible with 1.4X and 2X teleconverters. When using the Olympus 1.4X teleconverter, the equivalent focal length is 420-1680mm, and with the 2X teleconverter, the equivalent focal length is a whopping 600-2400mm.
The focal length is therefore suitable for wildlife and nature photography. The lens' weather protection is also perfect for the sometimes harsh climate of Finland. The OM System 150-600mm is protected against dust and splash water according to the IPX standard. Full weather protection requires the use of a weatherproof body such as the OM-1.
In addition to distant subjects, this lens can also take impressive close-up shots. The shortest focusing distance is 56cm at the minimum zoom and 1.8m at the telephoto end. The cine-equivalent maximum magnification at 150mm focal length is 0.7x, which is quite good for a super telephoto.
The OM System 150-600 includes a wealth of special lenses, and up to 25 separate lenses use multiple special lenses to improve image quality and reduce errors.
Despite the long focal length, OM Sytem has designed the lens to work well for handheld shooting. The image stabilization is 6 stops at the wide end and 5 stops at the telephoto end. In addition, with Sync IS technology, the effect is 6 and 7 stops, respectively!
The lens comes with a detachable tripod collar that can be rotated to the side or up for a better shooting position. The lens also has a zoom lock to make it easier to carry by hanging it on a shoulder strap. In addition to the lock, the zoom control ring has Smooth and Tight settings, meaning that the zoom is fast or firmer depending on your choice. In the style of super telephoto lenses, autofocus distances can be limited and the lens has a programmable L-Fn button.
The total weight is about two kilograms.
