The new G2 version of your favorite lens!
The Tamron 70-180mm was our best-selling telephoto lens for Sony cameras and now an updated G2 version has been released. The focal length, compact size and F2.8 aperture are the same, but almost everything else has been redesigned.
The biggest changes are the image stabilization and the optical design. Stabilization is found in many Sony bodies, but especially in the video segment, there are models where this is a really welcome improvement. However, adding stabilization has only increased the weight and size slightly.
The Tamron 70-180mm G2 is the lightest and smallest F2.8 fast telephoto zoom in this focal length class on the market.
Based on initial tests, the autofocus is fast and works great even when tracking subjects. Sony has limited the continuous shooting speed of third-party lenses to 15 frames per second, so for the A1 and A9 bodies we recommend Sony's G Master series if continuous shooting is important.
The image quality has also received praise, meaning this is definitely not just a stabilization update compared to the old one. Image quality is important because Sony has several 61-megapixel resolution cameras, and with these, any errors in the drawing are immediately revealed.
Usability has been improved and the Tamron 70-180mm G2 includes a Focus-Hold button to control the Sony's focus and a programmable switch with three options. The switch's operation can be changed using the Tamron Lens Utility software. The lens has a USB-C connector so there's no need for a separate lens dock.
The lens' closest focusing distance at the wide end is just 30cm and at the telephoto end it's 85cm. The Tamron 70-180mm G2 doesn't replace traditional macro, but it opens up a lot of new possibilities for close-up photography!
The lens weighs only 840g, for comparison, Sony's 70-200mm GM weighs almost 1500 grams. The lens forms a balanced whole on the Sony a7 series body even without the battery grip, and tracking a fast-moving subject is easy.
