This is what we've been waiting for! The Ricoh GR series is a classic of sorts. It's a camera that's not particularly noticeable on the outside but offers very good image quality. The usability is top-notch and the Snap-focus keeps up with even the wildest street photography and spontaneous situations.
The biggest reason why the camera isn't in every photographer's pocket has been the 28mm focal length, which is a bit too wide for many. But the new Ricoh GR IIIx includes a 40mm cine equivalent lens! This means a shallower depth of field and better suitability for portraits.
The focal length is a bit rarer, but this 40mm goes nicely beyond a slight wide angle but doesn't get as cramped as a 50mm normal lens - a very good choice for a camera where you can't change lenses.
Unbelievably, the size of the camera is almost the same as the previous version. The pictures can be misleading because the camera is really small when you hold it in your hand! You can compare it to the Fuji X100 series, for example. The Fuji has a viewfinder and slightly brighter optics and the same sensor, this Ricoh on the other hand includes image stabilization, which the Fuji lacks. The Fuji fits in a camera bag, but this Ricoh fits in a jacket or pants pocket as is, so you can leave the camera bag at home. The camera is always with you.
A high-quality Ricoh GR-2 telephoto lens is also available for the camera, giving a focal length equivalent to 75mm in film!
The feature list is therefore very comprehensive and sufficient for any camera, but now it is a very small compact that fits in your pocket! And inside the camera, however, there is an APS-C size image sensor found in most system cameras . It is worth checking the numbers 11cm, 6cm and 3.5 cm with a ruler and imagine the device in the palm of your hand. Ricoh GR series cameras have been standard equipment for street photography for years. The unobtrusive appearance, image quality sufficient for professional use and usability honed since the film era (including the Focus Snap feature) have made the camera a favorite of Daido Moriyama's own life.
This camera, like its predecessors, is a photographer's tool, the controls are very good for its size. There are adjustment rings on the front and back. All the buttons are located on the right side, so you can control the camera with one hand, using just your thumb. You can drink coffee with your left hand or put it in the pocket of a stylish suit.
The Ricoh GR3X features a three-axis sensor-shift image stabilizer that promises four stops of image stabilization. This image stabilizer is also cleverly used as a replacement for the Anti-Aliasing filter.
The camera's image sensor does not contain an AA filter, so that the image is as sharp as possible at the pixel level, but this sometimes leads to moire errors that can be visible, for example, in the details of textiles or buildings. The camera contains an AA filter simulation and moves the sensor microscopically during exposure and the moire disappears! The strength of this effect is also adjustable. So if you shoot fashion photos during the day, turn the feature on and turn it off in the evening for landscape photography, and you will get the best image quality depending on the intended use. As you can see from this feature, the GRIIIX is designed for very demanding enthusiasts and professionals.
If you have to leave your photoshoot suddenly and forget your memory card at home, don't panic, the camera has 2GB of built-in memory and the battery can be charged directly with a USB-C cable, for example via a power bank. Transferring images is very convenient via Bluetooth LE, and the GR3 can be set to send new images to a smart device even when the camera is closed in a bag.
The camera also includes RAW image processing capabilities directly in the camera, meaning you can crop, expose, and adjust tones directly on the go, and finally transfer the finished images to your phone to share with the world.
