The Monochrom omits the iconic red Leica logo. The camera's name is only found as a small engraving next to the hot shoe. The colors in the photographs have also been omitted.
The Leica Q2 Monocrom features a true black and white sensor - you won't get color images with this . Everything related to color wavelength filtering has been removed from the sensor and the microlenses have been redesigned. The result is a more efficient and sharp sensor. The maximum sensitivity is ISO 100000 and performance in low light is better.
Furthermore, the noise on black and white sensors is different, even when shooting at high sensitivity there is of course no color noise. To some extent, the noise is appropriate for the images, it is not distracting and can even serve as a stylistic device.
We also recommend that you try a yellow filter instead of a regular protective filter! When shooting on black and white film, a yellow filter gives a little separation between the sky and clouds and brightens skin tones slightly. And because the Monochrom is a genuine black and white camera, the effect is exactly the same as with film materials.
With a green filter, you can make nature and the green of the leaves shine again. With a red filter, you can create a dramatic black sky. Aiming for gritty portraits? Choose a blue filter and your images will capture the full spectrum of life.
The Leica Q2 is memorable from the first touch. The magnesium body feels carved from a single piece, sturdy and unyielding. The design is very minimalist. The camera has only the necessary buttons. The controls are located on the top of the camera and on the lens, clearly marked and can be adjusted without looking.
You can focus all your attention on the subject through the sharp OLED viewfinder. The viewfinder shows the world in black and white, which helps you judge and visualize exposure. No more wondering what this would look like in different shades of gray - now the world is black and white.
When you press the shutter button, you hear the soft sound of the shutter. It makes you want to take another picture. The feel of the shutter button and the sound the camera makes when taking a picture is incredibly addictive on the Leica Q.
The lens is the same very fine Leica Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH as in the regular version of the Leica Q2. The full-frame sensor combined with this focal length and brightness gives the image character. The image quality is of course top-notch at full aperture and thanks to the full-frame sensor, the depth of field is already manageable at such a wide focal length. The Leica Q2's autofocus is so good that there is almost nothing to say about it. The camera focuses quickly and smartly and also works in low light. It just works.
In addition to autofocus, the camera has a nicely implemented manual focus, the closest and infinity focus are always in the same places . The focus ring has a focus tab, so you can immediately know where the focus is by feeling it with your finger. For example, a photographer who has become familiar with the camera knows that the focus is at two meters and with an aperture of f5.6, quick snapshots can be taken immediately. Focus adjustment can be done with one finger.
Obviously, video recording is also possible. But above all, the Leica Q series cameras are tools for photographers. And this Monochrom version in particular also requires a passion for black and white photography.
The operation is straightforward and smooth, and the image quality is incredibly fine. The Leica Q is one of those rare cameras that just by picking it up makes you think about another photography trip.
