If you only buy one lens with a Leica M body, the 35mm Summilux is often the choice. The focal length works for both landscapes and people. The light output allows for images of the prevailing light even in low light and precise control of the depth of field.
This latest in 2022 includes all previous optical updates. The shortest focusing distance is now 40cm (previous version 70cm). The number of diaphragm plates has increased from seven to eleven. In addition, the retractable lens hood is now integrated directly into the lens.
Focusing between 70cm - infinity works like all Leica lenses and the focus is transmitted to the rangefinder. When focusing closer than this, there is a small response when turning the focus ring, the connection to the rangefinder is lost and a whole new world of close focus begins. In this case, focusing is handled using the rear screen's liveview viewfinder, the Visoflex electronic viewfinder or the Leica FOTOS program.
The Leica Summilux 35mm f/1.4 ASPH features a moving lens element (FLE), which ensures the best possible image quality at different focusing distances.
For someone used to DSLRs, the Summilux 35mm F1.4 is surprisingly small considering its light output. Despite its size, the mechanical quality is impressive, the focusing is responsive and the focus tab helps you focus very quickly. The aperture adjustment is also clock-like accurate. At full aperture the image is sharp, there is some vignetting and it brings a bit of drama to the images with the background bokeh. By dimming this disappears and the drawing becomes very neutral and flawless. In principle, there are lens options for the M-Leica that vignet less, are equally sharp or equally bright. The Leica Summilux-M is a suitably balanced combination of all of these and therefore a classic.
