Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS lens

This is the second version of the Canon RF 85MM F1.2 lens. This lens features DS (Defocus Smoothing) - a special coating on lens elements that softens the edges of bright areas outside of the focus area , meaning that the bokeh is velvety smooth!

The light output is slightly reduced, meaning that for low-light photography and general use the basic version works better. In principle, the depth of field is the same as with aperture 1.2, but the amount of light needed is about 1.3 stops more. If the lens is stopped down to about F3.2, the amount of light reaching the sensor and the performance are very similar between both versions. This DS version is designed specifically for portrait photos taken with a very large aperture.

Like other Canon RF lenses, the RF 85mm F1.2L features a programmable control wheel (can be used to adjust aperture, exposure compensation, etc.). The large, tactile focus ring is also customizable, and the focus rotation direction can be adjusted in the camera settings.

The lens's USM focusing motor is fast and silent. Because the EOS R's Dual Pixel AF focusing system works at the sensor level, it is absolutely precise. There is no longer a need for calibration tables and focus micro-adjustments like with SLR cameras. This is especially useful with fast telephoto lenses because the depth of field is very narrow at f/1.2. The Canon EOS R's autofocus also works particularly well in low light, so the lens's brightness can be used in real situations, for example at wedding receptions.

Advanced optical design

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM has a 13-element structure in 9 groups. It uses advanced special lenses such as a BR element, an aspherical element and a UD element that eliminates chromatic aberrations. The new BR element is very effective in correcting chromatic aberration, which is often visible in the image as a disturbing halo around highlights. This chromatic aberration is familiar to users of the older EF version of this lens.

The Canon 85mm also uses a new ASC coating. This multi-layer coating technology reduces flare and ghosting more effectively than traditional techniques. The difference between the coatings is especially noticeable in demanding conditions, such as when shooting against backlight.

The lens has 9 rounded diaphragm blades. The closest focusing distance is 85cm and the magnification ratio is 0.12X.

The Canon RF 85 f/1.2 is dust and weather sealed to L-series standards. The bayonet, the sides of the control rings and the lens switches are sealed. The filter thread size is 82mm.
