The Canon RF mount and mirrorless technology allow for wider focal lengths with less distortion, and now Canon is taking full advantage of this. The Canon RF 10-20mm is the world's widest autofocus full-frame lens ever made. At the same time, the image quality is on par with the L-series and includes several new technologies.
Now there are three great professional wide-angle zooms for Canon EOS R cameras: the Canon RF 14-35mm F4, the fast 15-35mm F2.8, and now this ultra-wide RF 10-20mm F4.
Thanks to modern computer-aided design, these new wide-angle lenses have very good image quality and offer sharp image quality even at the edges. Additionally, when browsing videos and Instagram, you will notice that impressive wide-angle lenses are very popular and attract the viewer's attention.
In addition to traditional landscape and architectural photography, video shooting is one of the most important uses for this new product. It is rare that such a wide lens with a full-frame sensor even has stabilization.
Professional videographers may have encountered a disturbing effect in their videos, where camera movements with the stabilizer emphasize the movement of the edges of the corner, i.e. the so-called wobbling phenomenon. Now Canon has designed a stabilization that minimizes this. This means that the RF 10-20mm is even better suited for run&gun style video shooting with a handheld or small gimbal stabilizer. The stabilizer has a power of 5 stops and together with the R5's body stabilizer, for example, the power is 6 stops.
The lens is also more than half the weight of the EF 11-24mm and is about the same size as the RF 24-105mm F4. In addition, most of the lenses are densely packed on the back of the lens, making it easy to balance with a gimbal and also great for handheld shooting.
The Canon RF 10-20mm F4 L features, for the first time in an L-series lens, an STM stepping motor for autofocus control. The lens group that focuses the lens is very light and is moved by a stepping motor. The advantage of this type of motor is that the movements can also be made slowly, allowing for smooth, subtle adjustments to focus when shooting video.
The focus motor also has position detection, meaning the camera is ready to shoot faster because the optics don't have to try to focus all the way to where the focusing element is.
Usability is improved by the programmable control ring used in RF lenses, which allows, for example, aperture adjustment or exposure compensation. In addition, the RF 10-20mm includes a Custom button familiar from telephoto lenses, and the index finger of the right hand can be used to conveniently change settings or activate a function.
The lens has a fixed lens hood. Due to the curved lens element, there is no filter thread, but there is a slot on the back for 35x20mm gelatin filters.
Like other L-series lenses, the Canon RF 10-20mm is weather and dust sealed
