The Canon EOS C80 is Canon's latest addition to its cinema camera lineup. The C80 shares the same processor and full-frame back-illuminated, stacked 6K CMOS sensor with the C400.
The size is only slightly larger than its predecessor, the EOS C70 camcorder, but it is still compact and has a similar design. Compared to the C70, the ergonomics and user interface have been improved. The connections are also better.
The EOS C80 is the second camera in Canon’s Cinema EOS series to feature the revolutionary back-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor, launched earlier this year in the EOS C400. The new state-of-the-art sensor enables stunning full-frame 6K resolution with 16 stops of dynamic range, keeping sensitivity high and noise low, resulting in truly stunning footage.
The EOS C80’s three-level ISO technology (800/3200/12800*) allows photographers to easily adapt to changing lighting conditions and ensure optimum image quality in all conditions. When necessary, the camera automatically switches the ISO sensitivity range between these three basic levels, making it even easier to use in dynamic scenes such as news and sports.
The EOS C80 features Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology, which has been further enhanced for autofocus performance, particularly for faces and eyes. The result is unprecedented precision and tracking performance. With precise face, eye and head tracking, as well as new body and animal tracking, the camera keeps your subject in focus even in difficult shooting situations.
The camera doesn't have in-camera stabilization, but digital stabilization works surprisingly well in new cameras. The camera combines information from the RF bayonet about the lens and software stabilization effectively removes movement from the image. With a stabilized lens, you have a new excellent hybrid stabilization that combines digital and optical stabilization.
The EOS C80 is compact and has a similar design to the EOS C70, but it has been made even more ergonomic than its predecessor, making it particularly suitable for handheld use and for mounting on gimbals and drones.
The user interface has been significantly revised and the EOS C80 feels like a new kind of camera in the hand. A redesigned detachable top grip improves comfort, and a multi-function shoe allows for the use of more audio accessories. The camera also features a brighter LCD screen for easier use when shooting outdoors, and an improved joystick closer to the thumb for improved ergonomics.
The EOS C80 is the latest camera in the Cinema EOS system to feature Canon’s PL-RF mount adapter, offering photographers virtually unlimited creative possibilities for filmmakers, with a wide range of PL-mount cinema lenses available, some of which support Cooke /i TechnologyTM metadata.
Built-in WiFi and Ethernet connectivity make file transfer easy, the camera can be controlled remotely, and the camera also supports IP streaming and multi-camera shooting. The EOS C80 has a full-size HDMI connector.
Canon’s latest camera supports 12-bit Cinema RAW Light shooting up to 6K 30p. It also features MP4 formats such as XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S. These deliver oversampled 4K 4:2:2 10-bit image quality while still keeping file sizes manageable, facilitating workflows from production to post-production. All image formats come with detailed metadata and structured filenames to help you organize and edit your work.
The new EOS C80 has timecode built in, but lacks genlock.
The EOS C80 is compact and has a similar design to the EOS C70, but it has been made even more ergonomic than its predecessor, making it particularly suitable for handheld use and for mounting on gimbals and drones.
While the predecessor C70 was a crop sensor with a 1.3x crop, the C80 is a true full-sensor cinema camera.
The EOS C80 is slightly taller than the EOS C70. The depth measurement of the cameras is almost the same, but the C80 weighs a little more. We're talking about bodies in almost the same size range.
