Canon RF 35mm F1.4 is a long-awaited novelty. This is the choice of professionals who need light power and are looking for a general-purpose lens. And now this is also sufficient for film use. And in addition to films, this is the number one item in the camera bag for many other things: for photojournalists, event photographers and portrait photographers when you want a little environment around the subjects.
Canon has promised in its advance materials that compared to the already excellent EF 35mm F1.4 II lens, this new lens is vastly improved optically.
The lens name is the same, but the technology is similar in many ways in the new RF 24-105 F2.8 Z hybrid line lens, meaning it has an aperture control ring and also image quality optimized for film use.
And the most significant change is the VCM (Voice Coil Motor) focus motor based on voice coil technology and the traditional Nano USM (two focus motors in the lens that move different lens groups). The benefit of this is very fast and practically silent focusing.
The VCM motor creates a magnetic field, so we expect the manufacturer to provide even more detailed instructions if you have a pacemaker or other sensitive devices. But this says something about the effectiveness of the technology and that competitors have not used anything similar.
For the first time, aperture adjustment is possible with RF series lenses using a dedicated adjustment ring directly on the lens. The adjustment ring can also be locked in the automatic position and aperture adjustment is done via the camera, just like with other lenses. Aperture adjustment while taking photos only works with new camera models, we are still waiting for a list of compatible ones or a possible update.
The Canon RF 35mm F1.4 is weather and dust protected.
