The first RF compatible 24mm lens in the L-series of professional lenses. Today, 24mm is a very popular focal length and compared to zooms, this offers F1.4 peak brightness and image quality even at full aperture. This model has a very sharp VCM autofocus!
It's great for landscape photography, event photography, and portraits of wedding couples, for example, when you want to include the surroundings in the image. In addition, the aforementioned focus and video features make this a great choice if you do any video productions.
The size and weight of the lens is very similar to other Canon VCM models, meaning the gimbal stabilizer and rig adjustments can be kept at the same settings.
Canon has announced new Z-series zooms and these primes with a VCM focusing motor under slightly different names, but the idea behind these so-called hybrid line lenses is to combine the most important features of videography and photography in the same device, meaning that you'll find an aperture control ring and image quality optimized for film use.
And the most significant change is the VCM (Voice Coil Motor) focus motor based on voice coil technology and the traditional Nano USM (two focus motors in the lens that move different lens groups). The benefit of this is very fast and practically silent focusing.
The VCM motor creates a magnetic field, so we expect the manufacturer to provide even more detailed instructions if you have a pacemaker or other sensitive devices. But this says something about the effectiveness of the technology and that competitors have not used anything similar.
For the first time, aperture adjustment is possible with RF series lenses using a dedicated adjustment ring directly on the lens. The adjustment ring can also be locked in the automatic position and aperture adjustment is done through the camera, just like with other lenses. Aperture adjustment while taking photos only works with new camera models, we are still waiting for a list of compatible ones or a possible update.
The Canon RF 24mm F1.4 L VCM is weather and dust protected.
