The Sony FE 8-14mm is a tool for special situations, at wide angle this is a fisheye wide angle that produces a round and black-edged image and at 14mm this is a wide angle that covers the entire image. Sony's first FE series fisheye!
The lens is quite versatile, whether it's astrophotography where the whole sky fits in the picture, producing VR material and traditional subjects such as landscapes and interiors. Thanks to the fast focus, it's also suitable for video shooting even at close range. And of course the traditional extreme sports shooting, but a large part of the future will be the production of immersive VR materials.
Fisheye lenses have a large depth of field, but the lens also has a bright light and a very short 15cm focusing distance, so focusing is also useful. There are two linear motors included, so focusing is fast, like Sony, and the camera supports focus updates 120 times per second, which is also enough for slow-motion videos and, for example, for burst shooting on the A9 III body. Focus breathing, i.e. the disturbing change in focal length when focusing, has been minimized directly in the lens implementation, but the breathing compensation function of Sony cameras is also supported.
In the wide position this is a round fisheye and at the 14mm end a diagonal fisheye which covers the full image area and therefore also works in Open gate video. In APS-C sensor size cameras the lens covers the entire image area with a setting of about 10mm and the lens also has a lock for this. Locking is also possible for 8mm and 14mm focal lengths.
The controls are extensive, including zoom, focus, and aperture adjustment rings, as well as a programmable AF Lock button.
The front lens is fluorine-coated, which repels dirt and moisture and makes cleaning easier. The lens is weather and dust-protected, meaning the bayonet has a rubber seal and all adjustment rings and buttons are protected.
A removable lens hood is included. Note: Due to the width of the lens, the lens hood will vignette at all widest focal lengths on full-frame cameras, i.e. it is intended for shooting at a 14mm focal length.
