Completely redesigned Sony FE 70-200mm F4 telephoto zoom, faster, better image quality and unique macro photography. Like other Sony II lens models, this is not a version update but a completely redesigned optic, only the focal length and aperture are the same.
Sony's new cameras set completely new standards for autofocus speed and high-resolution bodies test the drawing of lenses. Now both are top-notch, focusing is 20% faster, image quality is better across the entire image area. For example, the lenses remain compatible with the Sony A1 30FPS burst mode (the previous version only supported 15fps shooting mode). In addition, as a bonus, the weight and size are up to 15% smaller than the previous model.
Since the previous version of the lens, Sony has released cameras with 42 and then over 60 megapixels, and the lens is put to a completely different test. This 70-200 F4 II has been designed from scratch to meet these requirements. According to Sony's MTF charts, the image quality is clearly better. In addition, the focus groups move and sharpness is optimal at different focus distances.
However, the raw sharpness of the image is not the whole story, as the FE 70-200mm F4 II is also designed to provide a smooth transition from sharp to blurry areas, meaning that bokeh is beautifully smooth. In addition, the 70-200mm focal length is very useful for portraiture, for example.
The big innovation is the unique close-up capabilities: the closest focusing distance of the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 is only 26cm at the short end and 42cm at the telephoto end, and the magnification is 0.5x throughout the entire zoom range, meaning it is a semi-macro.
This does not replace a real close-up lens in all cases, but it focuses so close that animal photos, photos of flowers or even a small baby's toes are great. In addition, the lens is compatible with 1.4X and 2X teleconverters , which further improves the focal length and close-up capabilities! With a more powerful extension, the lens is already a true macro lens capable of a 1:1 magnification ratio.
With the telephoto extensions, it is a truly versatile device, combining compact size, up to 400mm focal length and macro photography. By combining it with an APS-C sensor size body like the A6700, the focal length is equivalent to 600mm with the extension, making it a really great set for demanding sports and nature photography.
The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II uses the same linear XD focusing motor as the 400mm F2.8 super telephoto. This focusing motor is almost silent, very fast and there are no fewer than four of them in the lens! The focusing also works great when using the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.
The focus reacts quickly, follows movement and with the previously mentioned silence, this is a good combination for video shooting. Videographers will also appreciate that, like new releases, the so-called focus breathing phenomenon has been minimized, i.e. focusing does not disturbingly change the focal length of the image. The lens is also compatible with Sony's In body breathing compensation feature, which can be found on the FX30 and A7 IV bodies, for example. In addition, manual focus works linearly, i.e. the use of follow focus systems is smooth.
Despite the improvements in image quality and focus, the lens is lighter and up to 2.5cm shorter than the previous model. The change in size is explained by the telescopic structure, meaning that the lens size changes when zooming, unlike, for example, the F2.8 model. However, attention has been paid to mechanical quality and weather protection. The outer lens elements of the lens are also fluorine-coated for easier cleaning.
The Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro adds a bunch of buttons. There are Focus hold buttons for locking focus or activating EyeAF, adjustments for limiting the focus area (also for the macro setting) and switching the focus to manual mode. Manual focus correction can be turned off, as can the image stabilizer. The stabilizer settings now include Mode 3, a third mode that makes it easier to frame when shooting fast-paced subjects.
The lens zoom can be locked for transport. The included tripod collar is rotatable and removable.
