The focal length is the same and the name says Art, but this Sigma 50mm DG DN Art is a completely new optical design. The previous Sony version was an old SLR lens with a built-in adapter. Now the closest lens element can be brought closer to the sensor without the limitation of the mirror and there are fewer compromises in the design in the same size package.

Camera autofocus has also improved significantly over the years, and much more is required of a lens to keep up with ultra-fast bodies like the Panasonic S5 Mark II, for example when tracking a subject.

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN features a new HLA linear motor . Focusing is performed using a single lens element and tracking is precise and fast. Focus quality is really important with such a fast lens, as the depth of field can be very shallow. The

Modern (read: complex) lens technology: out of 14 lens elements, three are aspherical and one is a Super Low-Dispersion element. There are no fewer than 11 diaphragm blades in the lens and these are rounded in shape, meaning there is a very smooth transition from sharp to blurry areas! This is especially helpful when shooting at medium apertures.

This 50mm focal length has become a standard for demanding good image quality, and the same is known now. The Sigma 50mm DG DN uses a special lens to correct problems that cannot be controlled in post-processing, such as astigmatism and field curvature. In addition to creamy bokeh, technical perfection has also been sought at the edges of the image. This is probably a tool for many night and star photographers!

The sharpness and beautiful bokeh of the image are therefore in order, but attention has also been paid to minimizing reflections. This is important because with this type of lens you often shoot against the light when the environment is at its most beautiful, i.e. the sun is setting behind the subject.

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN is about 260g lighter than the old version. In addition, attention has been paid to the shape and size of the lens, and this feels well-balanced with the body even at longer shooting distances. However, the weight loss has not been done at the expense of quality, the bayonet is made of brass and the manufacturing material is aluminum and composite in some parts. A large part of this weight loss and size reduction is already due to mirrorless cameras, because the lens is designed to work much closer to the sensor, meaning that the space required for an adapter is not needed.

Usability

The combination of aperture and focal length also offers great opportunities to influence the expression of the image with a short depth of field. You can pick out exactly the details you want from the landscape in your images. The aperture can be adjusted in a traditional way directly from the lens!

The adjustment wheel clicks at the third-stop apertures, so you can immediately feel the setting change. Sigma has also invested in video recording, so this mechanical sound can be turned off for video recording, in which case the aperture is adjusted steplessly without noise. Thanks to the lightness mentioned on several occasions, this also works great with gimbals for video recording.

There is an AF-Lock button on the side of the lens that you can use to lock the focus, but with new bodies this can be programmed to activate eye focus, for example.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is weather-sealed. In addition, the outer lens element is coated to repel oil and dirt, making it easier to clean.
