The Panasonic G9 II is an interesting new product, this is the manufacturer's top-of-the-line camera for photography using Micro Four Thirds lenses and the first camera of this sensor size with phase-detection autofocus. In addition, the video capabilities are very close to the level of the GH series.
The Panasonic G9 Mark II's sensor is technically identical to the one in the top video model, the GH6, with a resolution of 25.2 megapixels. However, the sensor is used with slightly different settings and in a different way, the aim being to have a wider dynamic range, for example when using lower sensitivity. This bodes well for landscape photography, for example, as the shadow tones in the image file are less noisy and the brightest tones are also recorded in the image.
The camera's most visible innovation is phase-detection autofocus . This focusing mechanism is the first time this has been introduced in a Lumix camera with the M43 sensor size. In addition, the camera , like its competitors' top models, has subject-detection focus modes for shooting pets and birds, for example.
The image stabilization is a 5-axis sensor-moving image stabilization. This was already very good in the GH5 series and the same is known now. Up to 8 aperture values and a boost mode is also available for this. The stabilization is probably one of the best and it is visible in the video. The same stabilization also allows for the creation of image files of up to 100 megapixels from multiple exposures. Unlike most manufacturers, this also works with the Lumix G9 II camera handheld and without external software. 100Mbps shooting is ideal for landscape photography, for example.
Which should you choose for video shooting, this G9 II or the video-specific GH6? The GH6 offers a CFExpress memory card slot for RAW video shooting, more sophisticated settings, and active cooling that guarantees production-level reliability. But for a hybrid photographer and if photography is still a big part of it, this G9 II is a great option!
The Panasonic G9 II has a body that is very similar to the full-frame models except for the Panasonic S5 X, meaning the controls are clear and the usability is good even with longer telephoto lenses.
The HDMI connection is a full-size Type A, so connecting an external recorder is painless. The USB-C port is a PD model, so it can also supply power while the camera is recording.
The battery type is now the DMW-BLK22 familiar from the Panasonic S5 model, but if you have a large pile of GH5-era batteries, these will also work in the new body! The body gets additional power using a USB-C power supply or a powerful power bank. The Panasonic G9 II is weatherproof.
