The lens is great for hiking and nature photographers. With the same lens, you can capture both vast landscapes and the smallest details of birds.

The lens's shortest focusing distance is only 22cm (i.e. about 10cm from the end of the lens), so close-up photography is also possible. The maximum magnification ratio is 0.46x, so the lens is not a true macro, but it is sufficient for many situations. Olympus MSC (Movie and Still compatible) technology is also used, so the autofocus works accurately and silently even when shooting videos.

In addition to weather protection, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-200mm includes other advanced solutions. It uses Olympus's multi-layer ZERO lens coating to reduce reflections. In addition, 3 of the lens elements are aspherical and the lens contains two distortion-correcting Super ED lenses and one ED lens.

Despite its focal length, the lens weighs a very reasonable 455 grams.
