This camera has already been nicknamed the Baby Q3. The base of the camera is based on the previous D-Lux 7 camera and the optics and sensor are similar, but the software, such as the menu structure and appearance, is like Leica's favorite model, the Q3.
This is a powerful camera that is suitable as a sole camera or a smaller second camera for very demanding photographers, for example when traveling.
Aperture control is possible directly from the lens and exposure can also be changed with the adjustment wheel if desired, and there is a dedicated control for exposure compensation. This means that usability is straightforward and fast, without browsing menus. The improved electronic viewfinder, which uses OLED technology, enables a more stable and natural traditional shooting position.
The Leica D-Lux 8 includes a 24-70mm cine equivalent and F1.7-2.8 aperture lens. The sensor is a clever solution originally developed by Panasonic, with a 21MP sensor that is used to its maximum potential, so that 17 megapixels can be used in different aspect ratios.
The Multi-Aspect sensor allows you to change the aspect ratio without reducing the angle of view and resolution - this has optimized the quality and drawing circle of the lens with different settings and on the other hand, for example, when shooting square images, you get a wider area than by simply cropping the image file!
The aspect ratio can be conveniently changed using the switch on the side of the lens without having to navigate the camera menus.
The sensor size is roughly M43 standard, which is clearly larger than the basic camera and 1.6x larger than, for example, Sony's RX100 series. This, combined with raw images in DNG format, offers opportunities for image processing and the image quality familiar from Leica.
A separate small flash unit is included, which can be used as fill light, for example when shooting indoors.
