But as mentioned, the image quality of the lens is top-notch and Sigma has boldly set out to make a lens that won't suit everyone, but when needs and assets meet, this is like a gift for, for example, shooting the northern lights or the entire sky.

Sigma 15mm Diagonal Fisheye DG DN in astrophotography

The Sigma 15mm was designed with landscape photography and star photography in mind. In other words, the goal is to achieve the sharpest possible image even at full aperture and at the edges of images, which is exceptional for fisheye lenses. The field of view is 180 degrees and the image is sharp across the entire field, and bright point-like light sources such as stars are also reproduced particularly well with minimized coma error.

Unlike portraits, these shots require consistent image quality across the entire frame. Performance at full aperture is important, as exposure times would be further extended if the lens were stopped down. This F1.4 brings the night sky to life in a completely different way than regular fisheyes.

In addition to straightforward image viewing, the lens has taken into account many things that make the photographer's life easier:

Tripod collar and usability: An Arca-Swiss compatible tripod collar is included, meaning the lens can be attached directly to the tripod head without a quick release plate. The tripod collar is located so that the combination is as well balanced as possible with the camera. There is no tripod thread on the lens, but for example, the ND filter can be replaced with gelatin filters. A cutting aid is also included for cutting a larger piece. In addition, as a fun detail, two filters are included in the lens cover, meaning transportation is possible without bending or extra fingerprints.

Manual Focus Lock: Manual and autofocus can be locked off. So if the focus is off, press the switch and the focus cannot be moved accidentally in night conditions. No more tape tricks if you use, for example, a Dew heater to prevent fogging.

Front design: The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens takes into account the aforementioned use of a defrosting heater! A clear space has been left for it and a protrusion has been made on the front edge of the lens to hold the heater collar in place! In addition to winter stargazing, frost can easily surprise those shooting at dawn and dusk. Details like these say a lot about Sigma, now that users' wishes have been listened to.

Sigma now has several really good options for stargazing, 14mm, 20mm, 24mm and this new 15mm. Each lens has its strengths, but what they have in common is the brightness and image quality, which is also sufficient for professional use.

And yes, the lens has autofocus and a fast HLA focus motor! So if you're shooting very close or shooting video, autofocus will work. Of course, at longer distances, despite the brightness, the depth of field is so long that you don't really have to worry about focusing.

The Sigma 15mm Diagonal Fisheye is weather-sealed to the same standard as the Sports series. In addition, the large lens element is coated with a dirt-repellent coating that makes cleaning easier.
